ABSTRACT STUDIOS

ECHO #1

Written & illustrated by Terry Moore.

Terry Moore plans to be a very busy man in 2008, writing “Runaways” and “Spider-Man loves Mary Jane” for Marvel, and launching his own brand new series Echo, which he will be both writing and illustrating.  For fans of “Strangers in Paradise”, this is very good news indeed, as this new book looks quite interesting.  Pick up the first issue and try out this new series.

AIT / PLANETLAR

HOLMES GN

Written & illustrated by Omaha Perez.

This graphic novel turns the classic representation of Sherlock Holmes and turns it on its head, presenting the famous detective and his faithful companion Doctor Watson as narcotics addicts.  Given this revelation, it’s a miracle that they ever managed to solve a single case.  One review compared it to “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas starring Sherlock Homes.”, which should make this worth picking up for that visual alone.   Snuff anyone?

ARCHAIA STUDIOS

CURSED PIRATE GIRL #1 (of 6)

Written & illustrated by Jeremy Bastian.

So, it's not enough that you're a pirate girl, and that your sword is actually a stick, and you're wearing a stupid hat.  But you're a CURSED pirate girl, which means you're doomed to be elbow-deep in disgusting sea-monsters and gnarled, crusty pirates.  Sucks to be you, cursed pirate girl.

AVATAR

GRAVEL #1

Written by Warren Ellis & Mike Wolfer.  Illustrated by Raulo Cacares.

So, um, as much as this is a #1, the real #1 was actually #0, which came out a few weeks ago.  Why they bother to screw with numbers like that is beyond us, except that this is a sweet book about a nasty magician with guns.  MAGIC GUNS.  It's Like Hellblazer meets Rambo.

BOOM STUDIOS

THE GODFATHER CHRONICLES #1

Written by Mark Waid.  Illustrated by Greg Scott.

This will be a comic that you can't refuse.

Don Corleone vs. Al Capone!  YES.

DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT

ARMY OF DARKNESS/XENA: WHY NOT?

Written by John Layman & illustrated by Miguel Montenegro.

Why not indeed?  It's not like it's the Defenders or something (keep reading; you’ll see what we mean).   :)

IDW

 F/X #1 (of 6)

Written by Wayne Osborne.  Illustrated by John Byrne.

This new series introduces us to an interesting new super-hero, FX, but it will likely receive attention more for the fact that John Byrne is handling the art for this series which is written by newcomer Wayne Osborne.

STAR TREK: NEW FRONTIER #1

Written by Peter David.  Illustrated by Stephen Thompson.

For anyone who likes Star Trek, but has never really been into anything that isn't the TV show, you should do yourself a favour and pick this up.  Because it’s written by Peter David, and he writes great Trek.  Basically, his captain is a dude that stabs people.  Captain Stabby McStabberson.  So, you know, like Janeway, only a dude.

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER #12

START READING HERE!

Written by Drew Goddard.  Illustrated by Georges Jeanty.  Cover by Jon Foster.

The next arc begins with this issue, as Buffy and the gang make their way to Japan to fight some Japanese vampires, eat some sushi, and buy more Hello Kitty merchandise than anyone can deal with.  This arc will be written by Drew Goddard (writer of episodes of Buffy, Angel, Alias, Lost, and the new “Cloverfield” movie), so for now, that's awesome, because the “Cloverfield” trailer has been dubbed by geeks all around as cool and mysterious.  Now if the movie sucks, then we'll just have to remind you that Joss Whedon still gave this his official seal of approval.  And Joss Whedon can do no wrong.  (We just won't mention that crappy “Alien” movie he wrote, m'kay?  M'kay.)

HELLBOY: THE COMPANION

Written by Steve Weiner, Jason Hall, Victoria Blade, & Mike Mignola.  Art by Mignola.

The Hellboy Companion is, well, just that.  A companion to the Hellboy series.  It’s packed with timelines, back stories, and all sorts of other reference material including ‘previously unrevealed secrets!’  Sounds like fun for any Hellboy fan.

INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDO OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL

Written by George Lucas, David Koepp, & John Jackson Miller.  Illustrated by Luke Ross & Fabio Laguna.

Almost everyone is excited about the fourth Indy film being released in May, and now is your chance to read all about it before the theatrical release.

SERENITY: BETTER DAYS #1 (of 3)

Written by Joss Whedon & Brett Mathews.  Illustrated by Will Conrad.  Cover by Adam Hughes.

Written by Mr. Whedon himself, also know as one of the best things to happen to comics since Wonder Woman hit puberty.  This series is a prequel to both the TV show and the film, and is brought to you by the same creative team that delivered the excellent “Serenity: Those Left Behind” series a few years ago.  The complete and un-killed crew of the good ship Serenity returns to give us a glimpse of the early days, before the show got cancelled, and focuses on one of Mal and crew’s earlier heists, including one where everything seems to go right.  Who mourns for the Writer's Guild of America?  Not comic book fans, that's for sure.

BATMAN: THE RESURRECTION OF RA’S AL GHUL HC

Written & illustrated by various.

Who knows why this crossover had to happen, but can you really ignore this event twice?  It had plenty of fighting and ninjas and brought back a classic Batman villain so now is your chance to read what all the fuss was about.

BLUE BEETLE #25

Written by John Rogers.  Illustrated by Rafael Albuquerque.

This is the big finale of the Beetle’s fight against the Reach, with the fate of the Scarab and the Earth itself in his hands.  This is consistently one of the best super-hero books out there, and is well worth a look.

BOOSTER GOLD #7

Written by Geoff Johns and Jeff Katz.  Illustrated by Dan Jurgens & Norm Rapmund.

Let’s see, the cover features Booster, Blue Beetle, and an army of OMACs.  Maybe saving Ted Kord’s life wasn’t such a good idea after all…

BOOSTER GOLD VOL 1: 52 PICK-UP HC

Written by Geoff Johns and Jeff Katz.  Illustrated by Dan Jurgens & Norm Rapmund.

With so many new books launched out of all the various cross-overs and epic mini-series, it was easy to miss some of the hidden gems.  The new “Booster Gold” series is great, and this collection is the perfect place for you to see what you’ve been missing.  Don’t miss out on the first arc of this great series a second time.

THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD #11

Written by Mark Waid.  Illustrated by Jerry Ordway.

While all the other Superman try to knock the kryptonite out of one another, two of the most dissimilar Kryptonians are forced to come together to save the day in this ambitious new story from two of the most consistently dependable creators in the industry.

COUNTDOWN TO FINAL CRISIS #8 – #5

Written by Paul Dini, Keith Giffen, and numerous others.  Illustrated by way to many to mention here.  Covers by Scott Kolins.

This title has been much better in the second half, and has been picking up steam as it races towards the end.  Worth picking up the last few months as this will lead directly into Final Crisis.

DC SPECIAL: RAVEN #1 (of 5)

Written by Marv Wolfman.  Illustrated by Damion Scott & Robert Campanella.

Written by original creator Marv Wolfman, this series is a sure thing for anyone who’s ever been a Titans fan.  This five issue mini-series focusing on Teen Titans fave Raven, as it focuses on her attempt to endure the horrors of Psycho Pirate’s Medusa Mask as well as the teen angst of high school.  Which is worse?  Read it and find out.

DETECTIVE COMICS #842

Written by Peter Milligan.  Illustrated by Dustin Nguyen.

Cult fave Peter Milligan takes over for this story that will see Batman trying to solve a global mystery, as he goes chasing clues around the globe. Will even the anal-retentive Dark Knight be prepared for what he finds? (And no, the term Anal-retentive is not a dirty illusion to sexuality, it means over prepared; jerks.)

GREEN LANTERN #29

Written by Geoff Johns.  Illustrated by Ivan Reis.

It seems it’s time once again for yet another retelling of Hal Jordan’s origin, with this new arc exploring the mystery surrounding the death of Hal’s predecessor Abin Sur, and teasing us with more of the prophecy of the blackest night.

JUSTICE LEAGUE: THE NEW FRONTIER SPECIAL

Written by Darwyn Cooke.  Illustrated by Cooke, J. Bone, & David Bullock.  Cover by Cooke.

To celebrate the DVD release of the animated feature, this 48 page, add-free special features several new standalone stories, including one of the earliest encounters between Superman and Batman.  And if you own the “Absolute New Frontier”, try to remain calm, and hope that they don’t release the Absolute Absolute New Frontier to include this special.

JLA PRESENTS: AZTEK – THE ULTIMATE MAN TP

Written by Grant Morrison & Mark Millar.  Illustrated by Stephen Harris, Keith Champagne, Drew Geraci, & others.

If you never read Aztek during its brief life in the 90’s, do yourself a favour and pick this up.  Featuring the mind-bending writing team of Grant Morrison and the then brand new Mark Millar, this one is far from your average everyday super-hero book.  He was in the JLA!  And this collection means DC is giving money to Mark Millar again.  Might we one day see him back in the DCU?

STARMAN OMNIBUS VOL. 1 HC

Written by James Robinson.  Illustrated by Tony Harris, Wade Von Grawbadger, & others.

One of the best written mainstream super-hero series finally gets the deluxe treatment it so rightfully deserves.  This book is the first of six volumes, which will collect the entire Starman series by Robinson, as well as all the one-shots, specials, and related mini-series, all in their proper order.  Whether you’ve never had the pleasure of reading this incredible series or whether you’ve enjoyed it in its original run, this collection is something to be excited about (and certainly the only positive news for our very own Toronto boy, Brock as far this hockey season goes).

SUPERMAN #674

START READING HERE!

Written by Kurt Busiek.  Illustrated by Renato Guedes & Jose Wilson Magalhaes.

New series artists Renato Guedes begins his artistic endeavours to start a new arc, leading up to the introduction of Chloe Sullivan (yes, from the “Smallville” tv show) in next month’s anniversary issue.

SUPERMAN: ESCAPE FROM BIZARRO WORLD HC

Written by Geoff Johns & Richard Donner.  Illustrated by Eric Powell.

Collecting the exciting three part story co-written by original movie director Richard Donner and featuring the artwork of Eric Powell (“The Goon”)!  And this collection also includes some classic Bizarro stories from past eras.

SUPERMAN/BATMAN ANNUAL #2

Written by Joe Kelly.  Illustrated by Scott Kolins.

Like the first annual, this issue takes a Silver Age story and gives it a modern day retelling.  Judging by the cover it’s about the time Superman, Batman, and Robin fought a giant, skeletal, pointy-eared guy who can shoot Force lightning from his hands.

TANGENT: SUPERMAN’S REIGN #1

Written by Dan Jurgens.  Illustrated by Matt Clark, Fernando Pasarin, & Jesse Delperdang.  Cover by Carlos Pacheco & Jesus Merino.

It’s nice that the Tangent universe is getting all this attention now that it’s a part of the 52 universes.  This 12 issue maxi-series sees the Tangent characters crossover with the mainstream DC universe as Tangent Superman attempts to impose the peace he has forced upon the Tangent Universe on the DCU Earth.  It looks like we’ll get yet another battle of Superman vs. Superman at some point in this one.  Now if they would only bring back the funky covers with the silver ink.

TEEN TITANS YEAR ONE #3 (of 6)

Written by Amy Wolfram.  Illustrated by Karl Kerschl & Serge Lapointe.

This excellent series continues the re-telling of the origin of the original Teen Titans.  Spot on writing by relative newcomer Wolfram, and wonderful illustrations by the underrated Kerschl.  If you haven’t picked this up yet, do yourself a favour and check it out.

WONDER WOMAN #18

Written by Gail Simone.  Illustrated by Bernard Chang.  Cover by Terry & Rachel Dodson.

Although the Dodsons are taking a break for two issues, Gail Simone’s run on Wonder Woman continues with this two-part story featuring an attack on Earth by the Khunds, as well as an interesting development in Wonder Woman’s personal life.

WILDSTORM

THE NEW DYNAMIX #1 (of 5)

Written by Allen "Danger Girl" Warner.  Illustrated by J.J. Kirby.

In the WildStorm Universe, there aren't a lot of heroes with morals.  They tend to cross whatever line they feel is necessary to create a finer world.  But what about the older WildStorm characters with, you know, respect for life?  What have they been up to after being overshadowed by edgier, grittier superheroes?  J.J. Kirby's art is FANTASTIC, by the way.

THE SECRET HISTORY OF THE AUTHORITY: JACK HAWKSMOOR #1 (of 6)

Written by Michael Cross.  Illustrated by Koi Turnbull.

In the absence of actual Authority comics, here we get some filler material and the definitive origin of one of the most unique characters in recent comics history, Jack Hawksmoor, who was kidnapped by aliens and surgically altered so that he could only exist in symbiosis with large, urban cities.

WILDSTORM ARMAGEDDON TP

Written by Christos Gage.  Illustrated by various.

Six WildStorm heroes are sent to the future to witness the end of the world.  Can the information they receive prevent a disastrous tomorrow?  This book is the first in a trilogy of series that will redefine the WildStorm Universe, the second book is WildStorm Revelations, which is out now, and the third book is an as-yet unannounced book being drawn by CHRIS SPROUSE!  WildStorm fans rejoice!

VERTIGO

ABSOLUTE SANDMAN VOL. 3 HC

Written by Neil Gaiman.  Illustrated by various.  Cover by Dave McKean.

So very, very beautiful...

EXTERMINATORS VOL. 4: CROSSFIRE & COLLATERAL TP

Written by Simon Oliver.  Illustrated by Darrick Robertson, Ty Templeton, & John Lucas.

This series has been off most people’s radar, but is definitely worth checking out.  On the surface, it’s the age old tale of man vs. insect, but this story covers so much more than that.  It’s well written, intelligent, fun, and has a dark sense of humour.  Give it a try.

VINYL UNDERGROUND #6

START READING HERE!

Written by Si Spencer.  Illustrated by Simon Gane & Cameron Stewart.  Cover by Sean Phillips.

A new arc begins here, as the group look into ritual killings of the young and beautiful in London’s underground.  This series has gotten off to a great start and is an enjoyable read every month.

YOUNG LIARS #1

Written & illustrated by David Lapham.

David Lapham’s first regular series since his acclaimed “Stray Bullets” focuses on two friends and their strange relationship; Danny Noonan, a habitual liar, and his friend Sadie Dawkins, who is compelled to live her life on the extreme edge ever since her near death experience.  This is guaranteed to be a fun, yet bizarre ride, but one definitely worth taking.

TELLOS COLOSSAL

Written by Todd Dezago.  Illustrated by (the late, great) Mike Wieringo.

This might be one of your last chances to experience this bright, energetic fantasy series from the recently passed superstar artist; don’t miss it.

TRANSHUMAN #1 (of 4)

Written by Jonathan Hickman.  Illustrated by JM Ringuet.  Cover by Jonathan Hickman.

Jonathan Hickman, of “The Nightly News” and “Pax Romana” delivers yet another examination of our modern society, this time skewering genetic engineering in a mockumentary style tale.

WITCHBLADE #116

START READING HERE!

Written by Ron Marz.  Illustrated by Stjepan Sejic.  Covers by Stjepan Sejic & Greg Horn.

The new ongoing creative team of Ron Marz and digital painter Stjepan Sejic continue the re-invention of the title character that Marz began with #80, and the two have committed to a run through at least issue #150.  This issue offers an excellent place for new readers to start.

AVENGERS FAIRY TALES #1 (of 4)

Written by C.B. Cebulski.  Illustrated by Joao Lemor.  Cover by Claire Wendling.

Marvel persists in reimagining classic stories using your favourite heroes, in this case a not dead Captain America and the rest of the Avengers. Delivering the tale of Pan the Man, this promises to be slightly less painful then a grade 3 class play … but only slightly.

CABLE #1

Written by Duane Swierczynski.  Illustrated by Ariel Olivetti.  Variant cover by Rob Liefeld.

The Messiah Complex crossover isn’t wrapped up just yet, so we don’t know if Cable is trying to save or condemn the mutant race, but we do know that Cable will be getting his own series again.  Cable is a mutant babysitter now.  Rob Liefeld would be proud.  Swierczynski is a relative new-comer to comics, but Ariel Olivetti’s artwork should more than make up for any shortcomings in the story.

CAPTAIN MARVEL #5

Written by Brian Reed.  Illustrated by Lee Weeks.  Cover by Ed McGuinness.

The final issue of this mini-series is a Secret Invasion tie-in, so even if you haven’t been picking up this series, the completist collector in you might demand you grab this and see how it all works out.  All that, plus the cover is by Ed McGuinness.

DAREDEVIL #106

START READING HERE!

Written by Ed Brubaker.  Illustrated by Mike Perkins.  Cover by Marko Djurdjevic.

You should know by now that you can trust Ed Brubaker.  You should be reading “Captain America”, you should be reading “Criminal”, you should be reading his co-written “Immortal Iron Fist”, and you should be reading Daredevil (we’ll pretend he didn’t write any X-Men stories).

DARK TOWER: THE LONG ROAD HOME #1 (of 5)

Written by Robin Furth & Peter David.  Illustrated by Jae Lee & Richard Isanove.

The fantastic creative team from the first series returns to tell the next chapter in the saga of the young Gunslinger Roland.  This will be good, and it will likely sell out, so don’t miss it.

FANTASTIC FOUR #555

Written by Mark Millar.  Illustrated by Bryan Hitch.

In their continuing efforts to boost the sales of the FF, Marvel launched one of the most exciting creative teams to ever work on this decades old title. To top that this month they offer you a NAKED HUMAN TORCH! Hot cross buns anyone?... sorry, we couldn’t help ourselves.

INCREDIBLE HERCULES #115

Written by Greg Pak & Fred Van Lente.  Illustrated by Khoi Pham.  Cover by Art Adams.

Normally people think of Hercules as a poofy, drunken Thor-light with stupid hair, but in this book it’s been a pleasant surprise to root for him, which is a real testament to Greg Pak’s writing.  Plus in this issue Herc’s going to beat the holy water out of many people’s least favourite super hero God, Aries.

HULK #3

Written by Jeph Loeb.  Illustrated by Ed McGuinness.

The first issue of this just came out, and looks like a pretty good start, and Ed McGuinness’ art looks fantastic.  This Hulk Shoot people!!!  But Craig says you shouldn’t think about it too much and should just order the book already before the Hulk burst a vein.

KICK ASS #2

Written by Mark Millar.  Illustrated by John Romita Jr.

This book is going to kick-ass!!!  It’s even some people’s early favourite for book of the year.

LAST DEFENDERS #1 (of 6)

Written by Joe Casey.  Illustrated by Jim Muniz.  Cover by Steve McNiven.

About the only thing in common for the numerous incarnations of “Defenders” teams over the years is the collection of members who have little or nothing to do with each other, and whose membership on the team makes you scratch you head and wonder why they’re together.  This time around it’s Colossus, She-Hulk, and the Blazing Skull (for God’s sake, the Blazing Skull?!?), led by the all new Nighthawk.  What happened to the old Nighthawk?  This new mini-series continues in the strong tradition of Defenders teams, which means it might be interesting for those of you who are curious.  At least Marvel still has the copyright on the name “Defenders”

LOGAN #1 (of 3)

Written by Brian K. Vaughan.  Illustrated by Eduardo Risso.

Brian K. Vaughan (“Y: The Last Man” and “Ex-Machina”) and Eduardo Risso (100 Bullets) give us their take on Wolverine in this three issue mini-series.  Not much has been given about the story (although we’ll bet you Logan stabs someone), but it should be worth checking out for the creative team alone.  The more Wolverine remembers the more pissed off he gets, and that’s bad for anyone who ever done him wrong.

MIGHTY AVENGERS #10 & #11

Written by Brian Michael Bendis.  Illustrated by Mark Bagley.

The last hurrah for the team that brought you Ultimate Spider-Man. These are not only the final two issue of Avengers to be drawn by Marvel’s most reliable, consistent penciller in the last two decades, but his final Marvel work as he prepares to jump to the DCU.  Marvel deserves credit for taking the classy route of actually noting Bagley’s contribution to the Marvel Universe with a cheery, polite good bye in this months previews.  Oh, and the Avengers fight some bad guys.

MS MARVEL #25

Written by Brian Reed.  Illustrated by Adriana Melo.  Cover by Greg Horn.

More Secret Invasion.  Is anyone else confused how the Skrulls can be causing so much trouble when their whole empire got toasted by the Annihilation Wave?  Anyone?

NEW AVENGERS #39

Written by Brian Michael Bendis.  Illustrated by David Mack.

One of the most unique talents in the industry takes over artistic chores for this issue as Maya Lopez (Echo) struggles to prove that the Avengers have been infiltrated by the Evil Skrulls… not that there are really good Skrulls, but still.

SECRET INVASION SAGA

Written by John Rhett Thomas.  Cover by Lenil Yu.

This issue examines the history of the Skrulls vs. Earth’s various heroes, and gives you all the details you’ll need to know before Marvel’s next big epic mini-series begins.

SPIDER-MAN: ONE MORE DAY PREMIERE HC

Written by J. Michael Straczynski.  Illustrated by Joe Quesada.

It's magic.  We don't have to explain it.

SPIDER-MAN / RED SONJA PREMIERE HC

Written by Michael Avon Oeming.  Illustrated by Mel Rubi.  Cover by Michael Turner.

Red Sonja & Mary Jane are essentially the same person in this story.  So you can read this if you’re looking to see Peter & MJ together again.  Although we’ll warn you, there is magic in this one too.

THOR VOL.1 PREMIER HC

Written by J. Michael Straczynski.  Illustrated by Olivier Coipel.

The triumphant return of the Thunder God collected in one enticing HC.  Yay, it’s like a blasphemous mini bible about a false god.  Didn’t one of the Old Testament books warn us against this?

ULTIMATE IRON MAN II PREMIERE HC

Written by Orson Scott Card.  Illustrated by Pasqual Ferry.

The 4th issue is available this month, or you could get the Hardcover.

WAR IS HELL: THE FIRST FLIGHT OF THE PHANTOMS EAGLE #1 (of 5)

Written by Garth Ennis.  Illustrated by Howard Chaykin.  Cover by John Cassaday.

Hey!  Did you know Garth Ennis likes war comics?  This is totally unexpected.  Especially from Garth Ennis.  He joins with Chaykin, for this World War I throwback, when an innocent hero literally gets his wings.  A refreshing reprieve from the Super Hero world.
