CLA$$WAR SERIES 1 COLLECTED EDITION HC

Written by Rob Williams. Illustrated by Trevor Hairsine & Travel Foreman.

This book is one of those forgotten buzz books that created so much excitement the first time around, when it was voted WIZARD’s “Indie Superhero Comic of the Year - 2002”. For everyone else, we’re wondering why bother after so long. But maybe we’ll all be pleasantly surprised.

DEL REY MANGA

WOLVERINE: PRODIGAL SON VOL 1 GN

Written by Antony Johnston. Illustrated by Wilson Tortosa.

I know what your thinking. Huh?!  What the heck? Why is this not in the Marvel Section?  At first glance, this looks like some weird way to cash in on the upcoming movie by attracting ten year old girls. But it's written by the guy that writes the excellent WASTELAND series (published by Oni Press), so it might be pretty damn cool.  Just in time for the theatrical debut of the X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE movie this spring just before FREE COMIC BOOK DAY.

X-MEN: MISFITS VOLUME 1 GN

Written by Raine Telgemeier and Dave Roman. Illustrated by AnZu.

More manga re-imagining, this time featuring the original X-Men in the shoujo manga style.

Looks like Marvel is reaching out to indie fans.

DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT

SUPER ZOMBIES #1

Written by Marc Guggenheim & Vince Gonzales. Illustrated by Mel Rubi.

Zombies with super powers!

It seems Dynamite is trying to reclaim the craze that was Marvel Zombies without having to share any money with Marvel.  I'm not sure about this one folks.  Could be just watered down Marvel Zombies but you never know...

...Okay, can we be done with zombies now? Please? Should've just quit after WALKING DEAD (which in our combined Elfsarian opinion is the best Zombie book on the planet).

IDW PUBLISHING

You’ve heard good things about this book, and have likely noticed it sitting there on the shelf, but like most people you haven’t given it a shot.  Well, now’s your chance to see just how good this book is, in this double-length full colour anniversary issue.  A great place to start.

RED 5 COMICS

NEOZOIC VOL. 1 TP

Written by Paul Ens. Illustrated by J. Korim.

Discover a world where the dinosaurs never became extinct, and human beings must live side by side these giant reptiles.  Red 5 have put out some very good comics in their short history (most notably ATOMIC ROBO), and this series is no exception.  This one is worth discovering.  I love it when great art and a great story come together.

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: ECHOES OF NEW CAPRICA

Written by Emily Salzfass, Mike Wellman, & Richard Hatch. Illustrated by Anthony Wu, Chrissy Delk, & Christopher Schons.

Frak! Frak! Frak! I can't really write about BSG, because I haven't watched it past the first half of Season 2. So I'll just say Frak! And I hope that by the end of Season 2, that Dr. Baltar stops crying all the time. STOP CRYING!!!

THE AMAZON #1 (of 3)

Written by Steven T. Seagle. Illustrated by Tim Sale.

This is actually some older stuff, but from two really solid creators, so it should be worth a look. Tim Sale is one of the most unique and impressive talents in comics today, and doesn't draw enough comics that aren't written by Jeph Loeb. In this story, a reporter goes to the heart of the Amazon to investigate eco-terrorism and missing Americans, but soon discovers it might be the work of ancient Amazonian spirits.

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER SEASON EIGHT VOL. 4 TP: TIME OF YOUR LIFE

Written by Joss Whedon with Jeph Loeb. Illustrated by Karl Moline and others.

Buffy Season Eight has been published for nearly two years now, but it’s still going strong and showing absolutely no signs of slowing down. If anything, it’s getting even better. This volume spotlights the meeting between Buffy and Joss’ very first comic book creation, the slayer from the future, Fray!

FRANK MILLER: THE SPIRIT STORYBOARDS

Written & illustrated by Frank Millar.

Check out all of Miller’s planning for the new feature film Sin City 1.5 oopse, I mean the Spirit.

Me thinks this book may be a bit better than the flick, but you never can tell.  But Frank, if your listening (or reading to be exact), skip the directing and come back to drawing comics.  We accept you, "God Damn" Hollywood does not.  Plus your better at it.

WILL EISNER’S THE SPIRIT: THE NEW ADVENTURES ARCHIVES HC

Written and Illustrated by various.

If (like me) the movie didn’t sit right with you and the comic book nerd in you is dying of curiosity as to why this character is so loved you might want to pick this book up. Let’s not forget it has contributions by some of the industries top talents, such as: Alan Moore, Dave Gibbons, Neil Gaiman, Mike Allred, and Kurt Busiek, just to name a few. 200 pages of storytelling goodness!

GOTHAM GAZETTE: BATMAN DEAD? (one-shot)

AZRAEL: DEATH'S DARK KNIGHT #1 (of 3)

Written by Fabian Nicieza. Illustrated by Frazer Irving. Cover by Guilliem March.

It seems like every time Batman goes down or gets beaten up real bad, religious psycho Azrael pops up to try and steal some glory. Now someone new has taken on the Azrael identity and is attempting to fill the void left in the absence of the caped crusader. Hopefully, Azrael won't go crazy and strap a flamethrower to his arm again. Robin, Nightwing, Talia, and the League of Assassins guest star in this three part series.

ORACLE #1 (of 3)

The Battle for the Keyboard begins here.

FINAL CRISIS: LEGION OF 3 WORLDS #5 (of 5)

Written by Geoff Johns. Illustrated by George Perez & Scott Koblish.

The conclusion to this series promises a new beginning for the Legion, and leads directly into next month’s ADVENTURE COMICS #1. A must for anyone who enjoys sprawling superhero epics, George Perez artwork, or has ever been even remotely interested in the Legion of Super-Heroes.

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #31

McDuffie continues to prove himself with each exciting issue as he continues his run that has forced the entire league to re-examine its purpose and confidences. Now in the aftermath of FINAL CRISIS, the league is at its most vulnerable, with trusts broken, emotions running high, and tensions rising. An embattled Black Canary struggles to hold her team together, but will this wounded and wayward squad be enough to save the world again. A new team and a new direction as DC’s greatest team faces an uncertain future without the big three.

THE OUTSIDERS #16

Written by Peter J. Tomasi. Illustrated by Lee Garbett & Trevor Scott.

The new look Outsiders continue to attempt to define themselves without Batman, and some struggles begin to surface between members of the team. The new creative team is taking this book in interesting directions, and making a book worth reading every month.  Give it a try.

SOLOMON GRUNDY #1 (of 7)

Written & illustrated by Scott Kollins.

Craig cannot in good conscience recommend this to anyone because Kollins’ art makes his eyes hurt, but he says that if you are blind you might enjoy this book that explores the fate of the most ominous rhyme in all the DCU.

ACTION COMICS #875

Written by Greg Rucka. Illustrated by Eddy Burrows & Ruy Jose.

Greg Rucka (GOTHAM CENTRAL, CHECKMATE) teams with rising star Eddy Burrows (TEEN TITANS) to bring us the new direction of ACTION COMICS, featuring the Kryptonian heroes Nightwing (no relation to Dick Grayson) and Flamebird!

TEEN TITANS #69

Written by Sean McKeever. Illustrated by Allan Goldman & Julio Ferreira.

The new team line-up debuts here, and fans can only hope the new team will help this series find some of the energy and excitement it has been missing for too long now.  Nothing like a new line up to draw in new readers or bring back some old.

MANHUNTER VOL. 5 TP: FORGOTTEN

VERTIGO

HOUSE OF MYSTERY #11

Written by Matthew Sturges. Illustrated by Luca Rossi, Jose Marzan Jr. & Jim Fern.

You should be reading this great new Vertigo title.  It’s filled with all kinds of comic-y goodness, and this issue marks the beginning of a new arc and an excellent place to start reading (in case you don’t’ like to start reading stories in the middle and all that).

ABSOLUTE V FOR VENDETTA

Written by Alan Moore. Illustrated by David Lloyd.

Liked V For Vendetta? Ever thought to yourself, “you know what'd be great? Having V For Vendetta in a book that's too big to read comfortably, and too expensive to justify buying in this time of economic crisis”. Well, DC is there for you.

WILDSTORM

EX MACHINA SPECIAL #4

Written by Brian K. Vaughan. Illustrated by John Paul Leon. Covers by Tony Harris & John Paul Leon.

RESIDENT EVIL #1 (of 6)

Written by Rick Sanchez. Illustrated by Kevin Sharpe.

Jim Lee and Wildstorm bring us a new miniseries just in time for RESIDENT EVIL 5, set in Africa. RESDIENT EVIL 5 sparked outrage, because game footage showed white people shooting up poor African villages infested with Zombies. There's no real joke here, just that people are stupid, and zombies only see one colour:

 The colour brain.

TOP TEN SPECIAL #1

But let's let the evidence speak for itself.

Written by Brian Michael Bendis. Illustrated by Billy Tan.

NEW AVENGERS: THE REUNION #1 (of 4)

Written by Jim McCann. Illustrated by David Lopez.  Cover by Jo Chen.

You’re either going to be excited about the idea of Hawkeye & Mockingbird alive and reunited, or you’re going to think this is simply fanboy wankery and wonder why the hell they were brought back and think about how much more you liked them when they were both dead.  And will DC notice the eerie similarities between this and GREEN ARROW & BLACK CANARY?

DARK REIGN: ELEKTRA #1 (of 5)

So Elektra was dead, then a Skrull, and now is alive and human. She's probably still a giant bitch, which is why everyone wants her dead again. Now that she is finally free from the Skrulls, there is no shortage of people who want to see her dead. Can a weak and wounded Elektra stay alive long enough to restore her reputation destroyed by the Skrull impostor?

DARK TOWER: SORCERER #1 (one-shot)

Written by Robin Furth. Illustrated by Richard Isanove

Sadly, Dark Tower standouts Jae Lee and Peter David have excused themselves from this one-shot, but fear not, as Robin Furth and Richard Isanove have been there from the beginning of the DARK TOWER adaptation, and should prove more then capable of maintaining the exceptional quality we have enjoyed thus far. Exploring the motives behind one of the most devious characters in Stephen King’s twisted fantasy-verse, this issue will carefully expose just how deep the treachery and ambitions of Marten Broadcloak truly go.

THUNDERBOLTS #130

Written by Andy Diggle. Illustrated by Roberto de la Torre. Cover by Francisco Mattina.

This four part story (continued in both titles again next month) begins in DEADPOOL and crosses over into THUNDERBOLTS. Pitting everyone’s favourite mouthy mercenary against Norman Osborne’s very own attack squad, the brand new Thunderbolts, this story might be the most high octane, all out action story of 2009.

AMAZING SPIDER-GIRL #30

Written by Tom DeFalco. Illustrated by Ron Frenz.

After two series and 130 issues, Spider-Girl is coming to an end.  For the very few of you who read this title, you’re likely quite upset.  For everyone else, you’ve got to be impressed with a one-off WHAT-IF story that managed to last that long.

SPIDER-MAN & THE HUMAN TORCH IN … !BAHIA DE LOS MUERTOS! (one-shot)

Written by Tom Beland. Illustrated by Juan Doe.

There was a really cool Fantastic Four one-shot released last year (in both Spanish and English) about them travelling to Puerto Rico and having an adventure.  Well, here we go again, but this time with Spidey and his buddy the Human Torch.  It should be a really fun read.

THE STAND: AMERICAN NIGHTMARES #1 (of 5)

Written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. Illustrated by Mike Perkins.

The second instalment in the latest King masterpiece to be adapted to comics starts here, in what can only be called the least uplifting story this side of Ennis. With the scattered survivors of humanity struggling to find their way in a devastated America, will anyone be prepared for the coming of Randall Flagg?

THOR #601

Written by J. Michael Strazynski. Illustrated by Marko Djurdjevic.

Everything changes, from artist to numbering, as the God of Thunder goes it alone. Having turned his back on his former friends in the Avengers, and now, the gods of Asgard, the series will take a whole new direction. Now is the best chance for new readers to jump on board.

ULTIMATE SPIDERMAN #132

Written by Brian Michael Bendis.  Illustrated by Stuart Immonen.

The economy must have had a terrible effect on sales, because Marvel has had to throw in the oldest trick in the book to sell this book. CATFIGHT! Literally, as MJ and Kitty go at it. Look for the limited edition Sexy Jello Variant.

ULTIMATE WOLVERINE VS. HULK #3 & #4 (of 6)

Written by Damon Lindeloff. Illustrated by Leinil Francis Yu.

Not a Hoax! Not a Dream! Not an Imaginary Story! Holy shit, they’re really going to finally put this book out.  Just think, since issue two of this series first came out America has elected its first Black President, New Orleans has been wiped off the map (and partially rebuilt), 4 major comic talents have died, DC lost the rights to Superboy, Thor died and was resurrected, 18 movies based on comics have hit theatres, Canada has held 4 federal elections, the Canucks have had 3 General Managers, and global economy has crumbled. Thankfully, Marvel reprinted the first two issues last month to remind everyone what the hell happened previously.

WAR OF KINGS #1 (of 6)

Written by Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning. Illustrated by Paul Pelletier. Covers by Brandon Peterson, Leinil Yu, and Ron Lim.

Black Bolt has returned to his people, and is now leading them on a dangerous and controversial path that will bring them into direct conflict with the insane usurper of the Shi’ar throne, Vulcan. Can the long suffering Inhumans withstand the assault of an angry mad king? Can the Shi’ar withstand the wrath of a pissed off Monarch. The greatest cosmic battle since Anakin betrayed the Jedi is about to begin. Plus, for some inexplicable reason, a Ron Lim Variant. YAY!

WAR OF KINGS: DARKHAWK #2 (of 2)

Written by C.B. Cebulski.  Illustrated by Harvey Tolibao & Bong Dazo.  Cover by Brandon Peterson.

I don't think this should count unless he fights King Kong. Darkhawk vs King Kong.

That's the fight comic that I want to see.

X-FORCE / CABLE: MESSIAH WAR PROLOGUE (one-shot)

Written by Craig Kyle & Christopher Yost. Illustrated by Mike Choi. 50/50 Covers by Kaare Andrews & Mike Choi. Variant Cover by Rob Liefeld.

Who would have thought a team full of violent stab-happy mutants and a dude who owns guns so heavy it gives him techno-organic prolapse could not get along. This month’s CABLE #12 and X-FORCE #13 lead directly into this special one-shot, which will then continue in next month’s issues of both titles.

X-MEN: SWORD OF THE BRADDOCKS (one-shot)

Written by Chris Claremont. Illustrated by Scott Clark.

Chris Claremont gets to spotlight his very favourite character once again in this one-shot all about Betsy Braddock, better known as Psylocke. Will this mean her return to the X-Men, or something entirely new? Read it and find out!

X-MEN: QUITTING TIME

Written by James Asmus.  Illustrated by TBD.  Cover by Brandon Peterson.

Has the fuzzy elf been replaced by the pink haired fairy Pixie? Or is it just that no writer currently writing an X-title wants to use him? And this one-shot is illustrated by fan favourite to be determined!  Marvel is also very nervous about the title of this comic as it may have not so subliminal messages.

YOUNG X-MEN #12

Written by Marc Guggenheim. Illustrated by Rafa Sandoval.  Cover by Pasqual Ferry.

FINAL ISSUE! What will happen to the team? Will we see a new #1? A string of one-shots? Or will they be forever stuck in the background of panels while other mutants take center stage??? Buy this issue and shed a tear for the next generation of Mutants.  I personally think they should become true X-Men and just DIE ALREADY!  After all, you can't call yourself an X-Man unless you have died at least once.

DEADPOOL VOL. 1: SECRET INVASION PREMIERE HC

The only character in comics that is even more vicious with his words then Elfsar’s own James Nadiger, made his triumphant return during the recent Skrull fiasco. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 1 TP: LEGACY

Written by Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning. Illustrated by Paul Pelletier.

Spinning out of the excellent ANNIHILATION: CONQUEST series, this was one of the hands down best new comics to be published by the big two in ’08.  This volume collects the first story in its entirety, and is the ideal place for you to discover how good the Guardians are!

As an added note, this series was also colored by a fellow Elfsar Saver file customer :)
