RAY HARRYHAUSEN PRESENTS: SINBAD, ROGUE OF MARS #1.  By Greg Thompson & Jeff Cruz.  After sailing the seven seas there isn’t really anywhere else to go other than Mars.  I suppose there’s the moon but that’s just a barren rock compared to a red planet filled with aliens.

DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT

THE BOYS #10.  By Garth Ennis & Darick Robertson.  Don’t know the exact plot of this issue but I’ll wager it deals with superhero violence and/or perversions and The Boys trying to take them down.

DESPERADO PUBLISHING

ATOMIK MIKE #1.  By Nilson, Cruz, & Bonilla.  Mmmmmonkeys!  I mean, look at them all on the cover!  Anyways, a future re-humaned version of Mike comes back in time to team up with his currently monkeyfied self.

EIGHTY EIGHT MPH STUDIOS

GHOSTBUSTERS: LEGION TP.  By Clavet, Dabb, Kurth, LaPointe & Blond.  When this story came out a couple of years ago, it slipped under many peoples’ radars due to huge delays in release.  But now you can get it all in one handy collection that also includes the exclusive San Diego Comic-Con issue.

IDW PUBLISHING

FALLEN ANGEL #20 GREAT JUMPING ON POINT! Written by Peter David.  Illustrated by Dennis Calero.  This standalone issue is the perfect point for new readers to find out what they’ve been missing, as Fallen Angel scribe extraordinaire Peter David treats us to a tale featuring Jude, the magistrate of Bette Noir.

THE TRANSFORMERS: BEST OF THE UK: DINOBOTS #1.  Written by Simon Furman.  Art by Barry Kitson.  Cover by Nick Roche.  Everyone loves the Dinobots and here you get to see them hunted down by the rest of the Autobots.

LITTLE BROWN AND COMPANY

TINTIN HARDCOVER BOXED SET.  By Hergé.  These are the classic stories that are soon to be made into a series of movies.  If you somehow haven’t heard of them before then you will soon (Minus the racial stereotypes?).  All twenty four stories collected into eight hardcovers and stored in a slipcase box.

MOONSTONE

BUCKAROO BANZAI VOLUME 1: RETURN OF THE SCREW TP.  By Rauch, Thompson, Williams & Wolak.  A hard rocking, neurosurgeon adventurer.  Red Lectroids from the 8th Dimension.  A man in a pickle costume.  These are the things you get when you’re dealing with Buckaroo Banzai.  The collection promises a whole bunch of bonus content ranging from unused comic art, to interviews with creator Mac Rauch, and material from unused film projects.

SCHOLASTIC INC.

THE ARRIVAL GN.  By Shaun Tan.  This silent graphic novel opens a window on the immigrant experience.  A man must leave everything he knows (including his wife and child) in order to start a new life across the ocean; a better life for his family.

STUDIO E3

GODS OF ASGARD GN.  By Erik Evensen.  Seems that Thor isn’t just a Marvel character.  It turns out that he’s from some sort of ancient myths or something like that.  These are the traditional Norse legends of Thor, Odin, Loki, and the rest of the Asgardians in an indie graphic novel.

DARK HORSE COMICS HIGHLIGHTS

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER #6.  Written by Brian K. Vaughan.  Art by Georges Jeanty, Andy Owens, and Dave Stewart.  Cover by Jo Chen.  The second arc of Season Eight begins right here!  Come and see what everyone’s favourite bad-girl-Slayer Faith has been up to.  Looks like she gets to do all the undercover dirty work that Buffy won’t touch with a ten-foot stake.

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER: THE LONG WAY HOME.  Written by Joss Whedon.  Art by Georges Jeanty and Andy Owens.  Cover by Jo Chen.  For those of you that have been holding out for it, here’s the trade paperback collection of the first arc of the new Buffy series.  It’s like a DVD box set only with no discs and more paper.

THE ESCAPISTS HC Written by Brian K. Vaughan.  Illustrated by Jason Shawn Alexander, Steve Rolston, Philip Bond, and Eduardo Barreto.  Do yourself a favour and pick up this collection of last year’s excellent, but overlooked mini-series written by the talented and versatile Brian K. Vaughan.  Inspired by and based on the character created by Michael Chabon in his book “The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay”, this story focuses on a group of friends who love the Pulp hero the Escapist.  This story contains both their adventure, as well as a story within a story featuring their hero, with different artists handling the separate parts.

GROO: HELL ON EARTH #1 (of 4) Written by Mark Evanier.  Illustrated by Sergio Aragones.  More over the top silliness starring the bumbling barbarian Groo in the first issue of an all-new four issue mini-series.  You won’t use your brain much reading this, but you will laugh.

LOBSTER JOHNSON #1 (of 5) Written by Mike Mignola.  Illustrated by Jason Armstrong.  This is the first solo series of fan-favourite character Lobster Johnson from Hellboy & B.P.R.D., written and with a cover illustration by creator Mike Mignola.  Definitely worth checking out if you enjoy the world of Hellboy.

UMBRELLA ACADEMY #1 (of 6) Written by Gerrard Way.  Illustrated by Gabriel Ba.  Ignore the supposed “rock star” writing credit, and check out what looks to be a pretty cool concept, with some fantastic art by Gabriel Ba (who you might know from his run on the first 7 issues of Casanova).

DC COMICS HIGHLIGHTS

BLACK CANARY WEDDING PLANNER.  Look for the TV series starring Mellisa Joan Hart on W network, Thursday’s after Bridezillas… we’re kidding, sorry Timmy. The Big Question is if this will be bigger then Black Panther and Storm’s nuptials, you know that “Wedding of the Decade”.

GREEN ARROW/BLACK CANARY WEDDING SPECIAL #1.  Has DC really considered the ramifications of this, I mean if they go the traditional route, and Canary changes her name… well Green Canary just doesn’t have the same ring to it.

JLA WEDDING SPECIAL.  As if planning a wedding wasn’t hard enough, try dealing with the injustice league while dress fitting.

SUICIDE SQUAD: RAISE THE FLAG #1. By John Ostrander and Javier Pina.  Rick flag JR is back from the dead, and just how he survived a nuclear blast will be revealed in this gripping spy book.  Meanwhile Amanda whaler puts together a new suicide squad for a new secret mission… to steal the guest list to the Green Arrow and Black Canary wedding.

ACTION COMICS #856.  Written by Geoff Johns & Richard Donner.  Art and cover by Eric Powell.  Goodbye.  This book no am about rampaging Bizarros.  Superman’s life are peaceful and his family members am in no danger.  Don’t buy this book.  Hello.

CATWOMAN #71 Written by Will Pfeifer.  Illustrated by David Lopez & Alvaro Lopez.  Cover by Adam Hughes.  This title delivers month after month with one of the most solid creative teams in comics right now, and with the added bonus of covers by Adam Hughes.  Things have been slowly building towards a significant change for Catwoman for some time now, and you should check this one out as the climax nears.

COUNTDOWN TO MYSTERY #1.  Written by Steve Gerber and Matt Sturges. Art by Justiniano & Walden Wong and Stephen Segovia.  Cover by Justiniano.  Dr. Fate gets another chance to star in a book.  His last series crashed and burned even before it got into stores.  This time he’s managed to snag an eight issue limited series for himself.  Let’s hope that this one survives its full run.

Nobody wanted to read it last time, until it got cancelled. So if your one of those fantastic Monday morning quarterbacks that griped about not getting a good dose of everyone’s favourite “other” sorcerer supreme until it was to late don’t forget to place your order… else wise you are leaving this title to it’s fate (oh that was so bad it hurt just typing it)

COUNTDOWN TO ADVENTURE #2.  Written by Adam Beechen and Justin Gray.  Art by Eddy Barrows & Julio Ferrera and Fabrizio Fiorentino.  Cover by Ivan Reis & Oclair Albert.  This is the series featuring Starfire, Animal Man, and Adam Strange continuing their adventures from 52, but it’s the backup story that made the cover: Forerunner vs the Nazi Justice League of Earth-10!

This issue will finally complete the story started with the first arc of the relaunched series, illustrated as only the Dodson’s can.  It will also feature a back-up illustrated by Gary Frank and Jonathan Sibal, who will be the new artistic team on Action Comics starting this fall.  Let’s hope it has been worth the wait.

FLASH #232 Written by Mark Waid.  Illustrated by Daniel Acuna.  We told you last month that things were going to be kicking into high gear for the Flash!  You really should learn to trust us by now.  The series has been re-launched, with the old numbering, and features the exciting new creative team of Waid & Acuna.  This series is going to be good, so make sure you start reading it now.

Don’t worry, you didn’t miss 218 issues, DC is just using “Mighty Marvel Math”.  It’ the Triumphant return of one of the most influential Flash writer’s ever, plus a dark secret is revealed! Why are there so many dark secrets? And Why can no one keep them quiet?

INFINITY INC. #1.  Written by Peter Milligan.  Art and cover by Max Fiumara.  Yet another one of the 52 spin-offs.  Seems like if you enjoyed any of the storylines from that series then you’ll find a new book to read in the upcoming months.  This one follows the fallout of the Everyman Project and the new Infinity Inc.  With Milligan as the writer, this promises to be a darker book than most conventional titles.

John (Steel) Irons, tries to figure out why in the sweet #%@* this story still isn’t over.

JLA/HITMAN #1.  Written by Garth Ennis.  Art and cover by John McCrea.  Unseen for several years, Tommy Monaghan returns, written by his creator, the one and only Garth (Preacher) Ennis.  Now here’s hoping we get appearances by Dogwelder and the rest of Section 8 (even though they are long dead).

Two Badass issues by Bad Ass Ennis.  When the JLA can’t handle a problem on they’re moon base they have to turn to Tommy for help.  But can even he handle the fall out from the unpleasant secrets that will be revealed. #$%*ing secrets; DC’s editorial staff are about as discreet as Paris Hilton.

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #13.  New Injustice League, New Artist, New Writer. I hope they use the Fisherman on this team.  He really deserves a solid push into the big leagues, I mean he has a fishing rod of doom… that has to count for something.

OUTSIDERS #50.  If sticking batman on the book doesn’t work, they’re going to borrow Wolverine.  Honestly, I picture this as being one of those Disney style team stories, where the beleaguered coach (Batman) has to lead a rag tag group of misfit underdogs (outsiders) to victory.  He’ll do the clichéd thing and introduce a controversial new team member, pissing off the team’s current star.  Eventually everyone will warm up to his gruff no nonsense style and do things his way.  They’re will be pitfalls, and everyone will almost abandon the coach when they’re doubt almost overtakes them, but an arousing speech from one of the quiet yet consistent team members will inspire them to keep going.  Ignoring historical accuracy, everyone will drink Gatorade.  Yay, product placement!

SUPERMAN/BATMAN #40.  Written by Alan Burnett.  Art and cover by Dustin Nguyen & Derek Fridolfs.  The goddamn Batman gropes a hottie.  Not only is she a New God but she also happens to be Orion’s wife.  The Dark Knight better have some Anti-Pissed-Off-Deity Spray in that belt of his.

TALES OF THE SINESTRO CORPS PRESENTS PARALLAX #1.  Written by Ron Marz.  Art by Adriana Melo & Marlo Alquiza.  Cover by Mike McKone & Andy Lanning.  If you’ve read the Sinestro Corps Special then you know that things are looking dim for the Green Lantern Corps.  This series focuses on the stories behind the individual Sinestro Corps members starting off with the brand new Parallax.

Things have gotten VERY interesting for the Green Lanterns lately, and these special promises to only add to the excitement.  If you picked up the Sinestro Corps Special last month, or if you even remotely like the Green Lanterns, you won’t want to miss this issue.

TEEN TITANS #51 Written by Sean McKeever.  Illustrated by Ale Garza & Mario Alquiza.  The future arrives for the Teen Titans in a very big way, with the re-appearance of their future selves.  Check out the first arc by the new creative team of Sean McKeever and Ale Garza as they challenge the Titans and set the stage for the excitement to come.

THE QUESTION: ZEN AND VIOLENCE VOL. 1 TP.  Written by Dennis O’Neil.  Art by Denys Cowan & Rick Magyar.  Cover by Cowan & Bill Sienkiewicz.  Vic Sage may have died but now you have the chance to relive the adventures from his classic, late 1980’s comic series.  The Question learns about Zen philosophy while fighting crime and getting the crap kicked out of him.  What more could you want?

WONDER GIRL #1 (of 6).  Cassie Sandsmark strikes out on her own to tie up the loose ends and left over monsters from Attack of the Amazons.  I hate stragglers, when the parties clearly over, go home.

WONDER WOMAN ANNUAL #1.  Written by Allan Heinberg.  Art by Terry Dodson & Rachel Dodson and Gary Frank & Jonathan Sibal.  Cover by Terry and Rachel Dodson.  This is the story that finally concludes the first Wonder Woman arc.  Let this be a lesson to comic book creators: if you can’t get your work done in time then you’ll be bumped for the next creative team… only to be rewarded with a special annual later on.

Will the real issue five please stand up… finally.  Plus a Gary Frank back up story!

WILDSTORM

COUNTDOWN PRESENTS THE SEARCH FOR RAY PALMER: WILDSTORM #1.  Hot on the heels (actually several years later) of Marvel’s Exiles comes the reality hopping exploits of the Dead Robin, The other, other, other Green Lantern and the Substitute Wonder Woman traveling through out the Multi Verse.  Starting in the Wildstorm Verse, where they will have to fight everyone’s favourite ambiguously gay duo and 90’s teen team.  Yay!!!

EX MACHINA #30 GREAT JUMPING ON POINT! Written by Brian K. Vaughan.  Illustrated by Tony Harris & Jim Clark.  A new story-arc begins here, and promises to deliver the excitement we’ve come to expect from this fantastic series, and likely reveal a few more clues in the mystery behind Mayor Hundred’s powers.

HIGHWAY MEN #4 (of 5) Written by Adam Freeman & Marc Bernardin.  Illustrated by Lee Garbet.  This mini-series has been a wonderful surprise, and is well worth checking out before it wraps up.  Great story, interesting characters, lots of espionage, and excellent artwork are just the beginning of what makes this one so good.  Trust us, you won’t be disappointed.

CASANOVA #9 Written by Matt Fraction.  Illustrated by Fabio Moon.  Come along for the ride, as part two of the psychedelic new arc of Casanova continues here.  If you haven’t been picked this one up, you should start right now!  And if you have been reading this series, you’ll already be as excited as we are about it.

LUCHA LIBRE #1 Written by Jerry Frissen.  Illustrated by Bill, Gobi, Fabien M Witko, Tanquerelle.  We didn’t know we needed an anthology based on Mexican wrestlers, but this just looks like too much fun to pass up.

THE MICE TEMPLAR #1 Written by Bryan J. Glass & Michael Avon Oeming.  Illustrated by Michael Avon Oeming.  This promises to be an excellent and enjoyable story with a little bit of everything for everyone.  And if that’s not enough for you, there is the added incentive of the modest price of $3.99 US for 56 full colour pages (and Image actually has realistic exchange rates).

SUBURBAN GLAMOUR #1 (of 4) Written by Jamie McKelvie.  Illustrated by Jamie McKelvie & Guy Major.  From the same creators that brought you Phonogram, comes a new mini-series about magic and identity.  Like their previous work, this one will highlight the cutting edge of British pop culture with humour and biting irreverence.

    MARVEL COMICS HIGHLIGHTS

HERO INITIATIVE

THE ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN 100 PROJECT TP.  A while back there were 100 different covers created for Ultimate Spider-Man #100 by different artists (Cho, Gaiman, Kubert, and Perez among others) and they were auctioned off at conventions to benefit the Hero Initiative.  Now this may be your only chance to see them all as this book will only ever have one printing.

MARVEL

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #544 Written by J. Michael Straczynski.  Illustrated by Joe Quesada.  One More Day is billed as the Spider-Man event of the year, and the story begins here.  Will it be Aunt May or Mary-Jane who dies?  Regardless of what happens, this story promises to usher in big changes for the web-slinger so don’t miss this one.

FRIENDLY NEIGHBOURHOOD SPIDER-MAN #24 Written by J. Michael Straczynski.  Illustrated by Joe Quesada.  One More Day continues here, with the promise of big changes for Spidey.  All four chapters of this story are 48 page over-sized issues, building towards the climactic life or death finale next month, so make sure you grab this one.

CAPTAIN AMERICA THE CHOSEN #1. By David Morrel and Mitch Breitweister.  This looks really cool.  The guy behind Rambo and One of the best new artists in comics stick Captain America in WW2 and show you just how much ass he really could kick before his accident with the ice tray.  Not only that but this book potentially features the only Captain America story actually featuring Captain America, and the only published art this decade from Travis Charest (cover only).

IMMORTAL IRON FIST ANNUAL #1 GREAT JUMPING ON POINT! Written by Ed Brubaker & Matt Fraction.  Illustrated by Dan Brereton & Howard Chaykin.  This story will be a must for anyone enjoying the new Iron Fist series, providing essential details to the story thus far while setting things up perfectly for the next story arc in the monthly book.  The writing team of Brubaker & Fraction are joined by the illustration pair of Dan Brereton and Howard Chaykin, making this story solid-gold.

IRREDEEMABLE ANT-MAN #12 Written by Robert Kirkman.  Illustrated by Phil Hester & Andre Parks.  Unfortunately this is the final issue, but knowing the irreverent sense of humour this series has had, they’re sure to go out with a bang.  Pick this up and discover what you were missing.

MARVEL COMICS PRESENTS #1 Written by Marc Guggenheim, Stuart & Kathyrn Immonen, Stuart Moore, and Rich Koslowski.  Illustrated by Stuart Immonen, Clayton Henry, and Dave Wilkins.  An all-new anthology series that will contain several serialized stories that will run for several issues.  Marvel is promising to highlight their prominent characters, as well as characters who might not otherwise get the spotlight (i.e., those who don’t have their own books), so this should have a little bit of something for everyone.

This will be worth getting just for the 8 page Hellcat story from Stuart Immonen… you know the guy who brought you NEXT WAVE!  There are other stories also; and secrets will probably be revealed.

NEW X-MEN #42 GREAT JUMPING ON POINT! Written by Christopher Yost & Craig Kyle.  Illustrated by Skottie Young.  This series has been getting better and better over the last year now, and if you didn’t jump on-board for the “Quest for Magik” storyline, this is the perfect time to start.

THE ORDER #3.  By Matt Fraction and Barry Kitson.  They started as the “champions”, then they where  “Title to be announced later” now they are “The Order”.  Forced to fight angry Hollywood producers for the right to keep this name, they are hard pressed to uphold the high moral standard of the Initiative.  Will they succeed, or will they have a new name next month, something fresh and original like “Muppet Babies” or “Justice Society of the Nation-State of California” find out in this issue, where, sadly no secrets are revealed.

X-FACTOR #23 Written by Peter David.  Illustrated by Pablo Raimondi.  The mutant books have been better in the last year or so than they have in a long time, and leading the way is one of the most consistently well-written and enjoyable books on the market, Peter David’s X-Factor.  The characterization and pacing are excellent, and the humour and noir edge add even more to this book.  You should be reading this.

X-MEN: EMPEROR VULCAN #1 (of 5) Written by Christopher Yost.  Illustrated by Paco Diaz.  If you read the twelve part epic “The Rise and Fall of the Shi’Ar Empire” in Uncanny X-Men, you’ll want to make sure to pick this series up to see what happens to the team that remained in space.  Christopher Yost has been solid with writing the New X-Men, so this promises to be a good bet.

COMIC FOUNDRY #1  This is an exclusive preview sampler of Comic Foundry, the new comics magazine hitting shelves this September.

What Is Comic Foundry?
The market already has Wizard and The Comics Journal talking to the two very opposite ends of fandom, but no one is speaking to the wide and growing number of fans who find themselves somewhere in between. Personally, I read a mix of superhero comics, indie comics, and manga.  My reading isn't limited to just one category—I like to mix it up, and I think most readers do too.

As Brett Warnock, Publisher of Top Shelf Comix said, Comic Foundry "fills a much-needed niche: a magazine that reaches out to new fans, and is neither too snooty and a turn-off, nor too entrenched in old-school, hard-core, fan-boy mythology, overloaded with confusing continuity. One with the perfect balance of mainstream… and indy sensibilities, in a gorgeously designed package. The perfect mag to root out the single most important niche that comics needs now more than ever... NEW READERS."

Comic Foundry is also different by approaching comics from a lifestyle perspective, with stories about how comics can influence your everyday life, through fashion, decorating, music, nightlife, and more. Comic Foundry defies traditional stereotypes about comic book fans with a smart and stylish package designed to draw readers of every stripe into the fold.

Stories in our first issue include:
- Interviews with comic stars like Brad Meltzer, Mark Millar, Brian K. Vaughan and Garth Ennis
- A feature interview with actress Kristen Bell on life after Veronica Mars
- An overview of the coolest comic book t-shirts available
- A feature exploring sex in comics, and what your pull list says about you

The Fine Print:
Comic Foundry is in the July Previews on page 384, #JUL073987. The first issue is 80 pages, black and white, and at $5.98, it's one cent cheaper than Wizard.
