GOD BLESS THE GOOGLE IMAGE SEARCH!

Here’s looking at Elfsar’s picks for Comics starting to ship in August!

DARK HORSE

REVELATIONS #1 by Paul Jenkins and Humberto Ramos.

Dark Horse Comics says this is a sophisticated murder

mystery set in the most unlikely of places – The Vatican.

How is the Vatican unlikely to have murders or mysteries?

Isn’t everything some kind of Catholic cover up these days?

But here, have a six page preview: http://www.darkh

orse.com/profile/preview.php?theid=10-078

BPRD THE BLACK FLAME #1 of 6 by Mike Mignola,

John Arcudi and Guy Davis.  The BPRD are sure

having a hard time with these frogs.  Mignola’s doing

the covers.  I wonder why he hates frogs so much.

AEON FLUX #1 of 4 by Mike Kennedy and Timothy

Green.  From MTV cartoons to comics to the big

screen later this fall, Aeon Flux returns.  Aeon Flux

is a freedom fighter who is trying to liberate the people

of her pseudo-Utopian colony from mood altering

propaganda.  Only her superiors have instructed her to

train a new agent, and of course that agent’s going

 to screw everything up.

CONAN THE GOD IN THE BOWL AND OTHER

STORIES HC by Kurt Busiek and Cary Nord.

The second lovely hardcover collection of Conan stories.

THE AMERICAN TP by Mark Verheiden, Chris Warner,

Frank Miller, Mike Mignola and Jim Lee.  He’s the

ultimate American hero.  Since the fifties, he has

been a symbol of hope and courage for the entire

nation, an indestructible one man army standing

tall for freedom, justice and the American way

– but what about Truth?  When reporter Dennis

Hough is assigned to cover his boyhood hero,

he begins to see cracks in the legend.  Does

the American have feet of clay?  Or is he himself

a victim of a larger conspiracy?

NEW RECRUITS TP by various newbies.  Want to see

what it takes to break into comics?  Check out this

anthology done by rookies to this glorious medium we

call comic books.

LADY SNOWBLOOD VOL 1 TP by Kazuo Koike and

Kazuo Kamimura.  This is a story about pure revenge.

Lady Snowblood was born with a singular purpose,

to avenge the death of her family at the hands of thugs,

a purpose woven into her soul at the time of her gestation.

From the writer of Lone Wolf and Cub, Crying Freeman

and Samurai Executioner.

DC COMICS

BATMAN JOURNEY INTO KNIGHT # 1 of 12 by

Andrew Helfer and Tan Eng Huat.  You know, I’m kind

of sick about everyone replacing “night” with “knight”.

“Knightmare”   “Good Knight” Yeah, it’s clever, but get

over yourselves already.  Pat Lee provides the covers to

this series, and three cents of every dollar goes towards

him starting up another comic company.

DETECTIVE COMICS # 809 – 810 and BATMAN

# 643 - 644 by Andersen Gabrych, Bill Willingham,

Pete Woods and Guiseppe Camuncoli.  For reasons

that are unknown to me, David Lapham’s CITY OF

CRIME story is taking a little break for August and

instead we get this four part follow up to last year’s

WAR GAMES story.  Someone is supposed to

die – FOREVER!

CATWOMAN WILD RIDE TP by Ed Brubaker and

Cameron Stewart.  Catwoman goes on a road trip!

Guest starring Wildcat, Hawkman, Hawkgirl, Captain

Cold and more.

SUPERGIRL #1 by Jeph Loeb and Ian Churchill.

Special origin issue!  Who is the new Supergirl?

Why is she fighting Power Girl?  You know,

there are some misanthropes out there who think

you fanboys are perverts and losers.

Don’t believe me? Read this article: http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,14931-

1636789,00.html)

SUPERGIRL #0 by Jeph Loeb and Ian Churchill.  If you

missed it the first time, here is a repackaged SUPERMAN/

BATMAN #19, a reintro for the new Supergirl.  And you could

have missed it, because Superman Batman sells like crap.

No one reads it.  Really.  It’s sad.

IDENTITY CRISIS HC by Brad Meltzer and Rags Morales.

I am buying this book.  Because when it came out, Wizard

said “It’s a good comic, James” and I said, “Screw you,

Wizard Magazine, I have free will and determination!

I don’t have to buy this!”  But I was wrong.  It sold like a

bazillion copies and everyone was laughing and clapping

and having fun without me.  So now, in a last, scrambling

attempt to be cool like Wizard, I’m getting the hardcover.

ADAM STRANGE PLANET HEIST TP by Andy Diggle and

Pascal Ferry.  Adam Strange is a lot like Captain Kirk.

They both like to make sweet love to hot alien babes.

The only difference is that Adam Strange is a responsible

family man and a pillar of his community.  Whereas Kirk is

 an intergalactic man-whore.

DC’S GREATEST IMAGINARY STORIES TP by various

writers and artists.  This title is misleading.  Because aren’t

ALL of DC’s stories imaginary by default?  I mean, no one

out there thinks that Batman and Superman are real right?

JACK CROSS #1 by Warren Ellis and Gary Erskine.

A scary world demands a scary man – and that man

is Jack Cross.  Cross is a one man solution to direct

threats to America’s freedom.  Hired by the enigmatic

Karen Huang of the National Security Council, Cross

is placed into flashpoint situations with carte blanche

to solve problems.  Here is a rare peak at Jack Cross’s

 military mentor,

Super Mario, play this game…. It’s fun!: http://www.burstfilms.com/

games/mario.php

JUSTICE #1 of 12 by Jim Kreuger, Alex Ross and Doug

Braithwaite.  Yay!  Alex Ross is back!  Wizard will be

SO happy.  Alex Ross is right about

everything you know.  Damn Kevin Smith for only

crediting Stan Lee as the creator of

Marvel’s beloved heroes!   Here is a twelve issue series

about whatever Alex Ross

wants, because we do not say no to Alex Ross.

Here is an exclusive peek at one of the model Alex used to

paint Batman (Scroll down a little):

http://www.livejournal.com/users/_tekwh0re_/440356.html

JUSTICE LEAGUE ELITE VOL 1 TP by Joe Kelly and

Doug Mahnke.  Reprints Action Comics #775, JLA #100,

JLA Secret Files 2004 and JLElite #1-4.  Is the world safe

with the sissy and pantsless Justice League?  Is it not time

for a more pro-active Justice League to kick ass for freedom?

WATCHMEN THE ABSOLUTE EDITION HC by Alan Moore

and Dave Gibbons.  Okay.  So I like Watchmen.  I have the TP.

And then I found the old, hard to find Graphitti Designs Hardcover

(It’s a sleek, black slipcase HC) and I bought it.  For a

pretty penny.  I was feeling all proud of myself that I have

another expensive and useless item in my geek collection,

when NOT TWO DAYS LATER they announce this.

Absolute Watchmen.  Which reprints the Graphitti Designs

book PERFECTLY.  As well as being recoloured by

Gibbons, WildStorm FX and original colourist John Higgins.

But the sick part?  I might buy this.  Is it wrong to own three

versions of Watchmen?

TESTAROTHO VOL 1 TP by Sanbe Kei.  Lots of people

run around and burn people at the stake.  And roast marshmallows.

YOUNG MAGICIAN VOL 1 TP by Narushima Yuri.

A young magician is summoned home to stop a clan of

Necromancers from killing girls to read the future in their

entrails.  Some helpful terms if you’re thinking of becoming

some kind of hippie freak:

Ichthyomancy is the divination from the heads and entrails of fish.

Sphexomancy is the divination by means of wasps.

Gyromancy is divination by spinning around in circles

(helps if you predict giggling and vomit)

Tyromancy is divination by cutting cheese.  I’m not sure how

literal you’re supposed to take that.  Experiment.

WILDSIDERZ #1 by J. Scott Campbell and Andy Hartnell.

Five young friends tap into a radical new technology that

transforms and empowers them with animalistic abilities!

Did you know that the sex of a crocodile is determined by

the temperature during the egg incubation?  Did you know

that elephants can’t jump? Did you know that the hippopotamus

has pink sweat?  Did you know Octopi have three hearts?

I’ll wager J. Scott Campbell doesn’t know either.

THE AUTHORITY REVOLUTION BOOK ONE TP by Ed

Brubaker and Dustin Nguyen.   Just when you thought

Bush was bad, the Authority overthrows the US government.

THE WINTER MEN #1 of 8 by Brett Lewis and John Paul

Leon.  Whatever became of the USSR’s super soldiers

after the Soviet Union collapsed?  The answer is in here.

TOP 10: BEYOND THE FARTHEST PRECINT #1 of 5 by

Paul DiFilippo and Jerry Ordway.  Catch up with Toybox,

Kemlo Caesar, Smax, King Peacock, Joe Pi and everyone

else in this new limited series, set five years after the

EXCELLENT Smax mini series.

V FOR VENDETTA NEW EDITION HC by Alan Moore and

David Lloyd.  Just in time to be butchered in a new movie,

this classic comic is given a brand new hardcover.

But the movie’s got Natalie Portman, so I’m there.

IMAGE COMICS

ANT #1 by Mario Gully.  This chick who thinks she’s an

ant is committed to an insane asylum.  She gripes about

how life isn’t fair.

DUSTY STAR #1 by Andrew Robinson and Joe Pruett.

It’s a different time and a strange place.  It’s burlesque

shows and all-night poker games.  It’s robots and flying

ships.  It’s tattooed horses and new wave cowboys with

bad attitudes.  This is the world of Dusty Star.

FERRO CITY by Jason Armstrong.  His partner is dead.

The cops are out to pin it in on him.  And the only solid proof

he has to clear himself is a tiny gadget that could grant ten

million sentient robots their freedom: the Medusa Key.

Too bad the Ferro City mob wants it too.

THE FACELESS A TERRY SHARP STORY OGN by Robert

Tinnell and Adrian Salmon.  By day, Terry Sharp directs horror

movies but by night he fights a relentless crusade against a

satanic conspiracy.

INDIGO VERTIGO by Katie-Jane Garside and Dan Schaffer.

This book is described as the comic equivalent of a David Lynch

having carnal relations with Sylvia Plath.

Here is David Lynch: http://www.nndb.com/people/720/000

024648/david-lynch.jpg

Here is Sylvia Plath: http://www.hypatia-trust.org.uk/images/plath1.jpg

I leave the rest to your sick imaginations.  And Photoshop.

SEASON OF THE WITCH #0 by Jai Nitz and Kevin Sharpe.

Jessica Suddreth was a normal high school freshman until she

was magically transported to the fairytale world of Asamondo.

There she trains to be a mystical warrior called a Spell Sword.

I’m sorry, but there’s no such thing as a “normal” high school kid.

They look like this: http://news.minnesota.publicradio.org/features/

WINGS OF ANANSI by Michael Avon Oeming and Greg Titus.

This is the story of a stripper, a drug lord, a loser and a spider.

It’s based off an African folk tale.

COYOTE VOL 1 TP by Steve Englehart and Marshall Rogers.

The fine folks who brought us two great Batman stories (Strange

Apparitions and Dark Detective) bring us this collection of early

work unseen for twenty years.

GUN FU TP by Howard M. Sum and Joe Mason.  The year is 1936.

Cheng Bo Sen is a Hong Kong cop.  England enlists him as a

secret agent to fight the Nazis.  Also, he speaks hip hop.  For shizzle.

THE NECROMANCER #1 by Joshua Ortega and Francis Manapul.

Abigail is a stunning 17 year old girl with a natural talent for magic.

She’s pretty, popular and talented so why is she on the verge of

killing herself?

WANTED TP by Mark Millar and J.G. Jones.  Now available in softcover.

MARVEL COMICS

ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR ANNUAL #1 by Mark Millar

and Jae Lee.  Enter: The Ultimate Inhumans!  This is going to

tie in to a future Ultimate Fantastic Four story called “Tomb of Namor”

ULTIMATE X-MEN ANNUAL #1 by Brian K. Vaughan and

Tom Raney.  Ultimate Juggernaut returns!  He fights

Ultimate Gambit and Ultimate Rogue for the Ultimate Gem

of Cyttorak for Ultimate Victory of Ultimate Earth!

ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN ANNUAL #1 by Brian Michael

Bendis and Mark Brooks.  Ultimate Spider-Man gets a new

Ultimate Girl Friend.  He broke up with Ultimate Mary Jane

and Ultimate Gwen Stacy is dead.  So who’s he shacking

up with now?  Ultimate Spider-Man is the Ultimate Man-Whore.

ULTIMATES ANNUAL #1 by Mark Millar and Steve Dillon.

Ultimate Nick Fury has two superteams!  Meet the second one!

DAREDEVIL FATHER DIRECTOR’S CUT #1 by Joe Quesada.

Well, #1 came out over a year ago, and to celebrate,

Marvel Comics is pleased to offer #1 again.

With a new cover, a higher price and the promise that #2

is ALMOST DONE!  You Marvel fans must be very, very proud.

MARVEL 1602 NEW WORLD #1 & 2 of 6 by Greg Pak and

Greg Tocchini.  So, this mini series will divide the fanboys forever.

Who will get this even though Neil Gaiman has nothing to do with it?

Who will buy it because Spider-Man is in it?  Who will buy it

because there are dinosaurs in it?

WHA… HUH? by Brian Michael Bendis and Jim Mahfood.

Also reoffered because it’s very late.  Witness Marvel

comics making fun of Identity Crisis just because IC got

more press in Wizard.

MEGA MORPHS #1 & 2 of 4 by Sean McKeever and

Lou Kang.  (How cool is that name… insert your Mortal

Kombat joke here) Okay, so I love giant robots.  Especially

when the giant robots are in the shape of Wolverine, Captain

America, Ghost Rider, The Hulk and Spider-Man.  Lots of

things explode, I bet.

EARTH X HC by Jim Krueger, Alex Ross and John

Paul Leon.  Alex Ross is great because while he likes

to maintain the purity of the old school heroes, he has

no problem screwing them over in horrible alternate

futures.  I’d call it “hypocrisy” except that Wizard tells me Ross is cool.

RUNAWAYS VOL 1 HC by Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian

Alphona.  The first 18 issue series is collected into a lovely

oversized hardcover.  Six kids discover that their parents

are actually supervillains.  Some will try and stop them and

some might decide to join them.  You’ll have to buy the book

to find out.  My dad’s a librarian.  It’s a different kind of evil.

ULTIMATES 2 VOL 1 GODS AND MONSTERS TP by

Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch.  Ultimate Hulk is on trial for

his life!  Ultimate Thor goes nuts and has to get an

Ultimate Ass-kicking!

ASTONISHING X-MEN VOL 2 DANGEROUS TP by

Joss Whedon and John Cassaday.  The second half

to Whedon and Cassaday’s FIRST year

of X-Men.  That’s right, fanboys, they’ve signed on for

a second year of 5 late comics.

STRANGE TP by J. Michael Straczynski and Brandon

Peterson.  Basically, Dr. Strange gets a new coat and

an updated origin.

AIT/PLANET LAR

IMAGINARIES VOL 1 LOST & FOUND  by Mike S. Miller.

My little sister once had an imaginary friend.  On car rides,

we’d all sit in the back seat.  Me on the left, my sister on the

right and the imaginary friend in the middle.  I kept unbuckling

the middle seat belt and my sister kept freaking out because

she was afraid that her imaginary friend would go flying

 through the windshield.

SPIKE: OLD TIMES by Peter David and Fernando Goni.

Years ago, a young poet

named William was humiliated by the woman he loved, the

elegant Cecily (he wrote

a poem about her).  Years later, Cecily is a vengeance demon

 known as Halfrek and

Williams is the vampire Spike and he’s out to stop her from

destroying another young

poet’s life.  Here is a poem I found for you: *ahem*

A young man whose sight was myopic
Thought sex an incredible topic.
So poor were his eyes,
That despite its great size,
His penis appeared microscopic.

LOLA GN by J. Torres and R’John Bernales.
I met her in a club down in old Soho/where you drink
champagne and it tastes just like
Cherry Cola/C-O-L-A Cola./She walked up to me and
she asked me to dance./I asked
her her name and in a dark brown voice she said,
"Lola"/L-O-L-A Lola, lo lo lo Lola/Well,
I'm not the world's most physical guy,/but when she
squeezed me tight she nearly broke
my spine/Oh my Lola, lo lo lo Lola, lo lo lo Lola/Well,
I'm not dumb but I can't
understand/why she walks like a woman and talks like
a man/Oh my Lola, lo lo lo Lola,
lo lo lo Lola/Well, we drank champagne and danced all
night,

under electric candlelight,/she picked me up and sat me

on her knee,/She said,

"Little boy won't you come home with me?"/Well, I'm

not the world's most passionate guy,

/but when I looked in her eyes,/I almost fell for my

Lola,/Lo lo lo Lola, lo lo lo Lola/I

pushed her away.

I walked to the door./I fell to the floor. I got down on

my knees./I looked at her, and she

 at me.

/Well that's the way that I want it to stay./I always

want it to be that way for my Lola./Lo

 lo lo Lola.

/Girls will be boys, and boys will be girls./It's a mixed up,

muddled up, shook up world,

/except for

Lola. Lo lo lo Lola. Lo lo lo Lola./Well I left home just

a week ago,/and I never ever

kissed a woman before

,/Lola smiled and took me by the hand,/she said,

"Little boy, gonna make you a man."

/Well I'm not the world's most masculine man,/but I

know what I am and that I'm a man,

/so is Lola./Lo lo lo Lola. Lo lo lo Lola.

So, yeah I went for karaoke the other night.

Apparently this book is about a

young man who sees demons that nobody else can see.

A not about people like this:

ROCKETO #1 by Frank Espinosa.  This just sounds

cool:  Set 2,000 years in a mythical

future, the world as we know it has been destroyed

in a catastrophe and its magnetic

field distorted.  The only way for mankind to now

navigate through the broken land masses

is by the unique abilities of the Mappers,

a genetically engineered group of men and

women who act as human compasses.
