UDON

DARKSTALKERS TRIBUTE

By Udon & a bunch of people from DeviantArt.

The STREET FIGHTER TRIBUTE was a book full of fan art of Chun Li kicking high so you could see her panties. I expect the Darkstalkers Tribute book will be full of fan art of... uh... that cat lady... or that devil lady... kicking high so you can see their evil crotches?

UNIVERSE PUBLISHING

UNIVERSAL STUDIO MONSTERS: A LEGACY OF HORROR HC

A nice big hardcover book that chronicles the foundations and legacy of Monsters that universal built. VIKING

VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE: MEMORIES OF STAR TREK AND A LIFE IN HOLLYWOOD

(ATTENTION AGAIN: STAR TREK LOVERS!)

Nick Meyer saved Star Trek. After the bloated, if intellectually stimulating, first film, many felt that Star Trek was finished and destined to be forgotten. But once Nick Meyer got his hands on the franchise and gave us THE WRATH OF KHAN, everything changed. Here now, for the first time, is a valuable book of memoirs from the man who killed Spock (STAR TREK II), made Sherlock Holmes an addict (7% SOLUTION), pitted HG Wells against Jack the Ripper (TIME AFTER TIME), and united the Federation and the Klingons (STAR TREK VI). This is a must for Star Trek fans or anybody looking to get insight into the hectic world of film.

DC COMICS HIGHLIGHTS

ADVENTURES COMICS #1

Written by Geoff Johns. Illustrated by Francis Manapul / co-feature illustrated by Clayton Henry. Covers by Francis Manapul.

Superboy returns to the DCU and is doing so in his original title, Adventure Comics! The recently returned Superboy (Conner Kent) heads for Smallville to restart his life and, I guess, play with his dog. Geoff Johns returns to writing the boy of steel, and rising superstar Francis Manapul contributes some beautiful looking illustrations. Plus, an appropriately ongoing co-feature starring a rotating cast from the Legion of Superheroes.

BATGIRL #1

Written by Bryan Q. Miller. Illustrated by Lee Garbett & Trevor Scott. Cover by Phil Noto. 1/25 variant cover by J.G. Jones.

Okay, so we don’t know who is underneath the mask as the new Batgirl, but much like Red Robin, the answer to that mystery should be revealed to us in short order. Is it original Batgirl Barbara Gordon, more recent Batgirl Cassandra Cain, Spoiler, Squire, or someone entirely new? Miller is a newcomer being given his big chance on this title, but Garbett & Scott’s recent illustration work on OUTSIDERS was very good. And of course there’s the very Adam Hughes-esque “good girl” cover by Phil Noto if that helps you make your decision at all.

BATMAN #689

Written by Judd Winick. Illustrated by Mark Bagley and Rob Hunter.

Mark Bagley continues his run on Batman, illustrating the hero’s attempts to recapture all the escaped Arkham Asylum inmates. Also in this issue, Two-Face begins his own bid for power while The Penguin tries to become Gotham’s new crime boss.

The new Batman and Robin finish off their battle against Professor Pyg and the Circus of Strange. Wait ... another circus? What is it with the new Batman and circuses? It’s almost as if he came from a circus once. Oh. Wait. He did.

BATMAN: WIDENING GYRE #1 (of 6)

Written by Kevin Smith. Illustrated by Walter Flanagan. Cover by Bill Sienkiewicz.

Batman takes on a new masked vigilante in this series by famous movie creator and infamous comic book creator Kevin Smith.  The thought of Smith doing 6 issues doesn’t instil confidence, as Smith has proven time and again that he takes his sweet ass time to deliver new scripts (GREEN ARROW, DAREDEVIL, and BLACK CAT). Smith teams up with Flanagan (BATMAN: CACOPHONY) once again to bring you “backdrop of romance, intrigue, and geek-bait guest stars galore!"

BLACKEST NIGHT #2

Written by Geoff Johns. Illustrated by Ivan Reis and Oclair Albert. 1/25 variant cover by Mauro Cascioli.

DC’s big summer blockbuster continues as the heroes of the DCU have to deal with even more Black Lanterns turning up, which of course means more resurrected dead heroes. Hmm ... could an Army of Darkness crossover be far behind?

BLACKEST NIGHT: BATMAN #1 (of 3)

Written by Peter J. Tomasi. Illustrated by Adrian Saef. Cover by Andy Kubert. 1/25 variant cover by Bill Sienkiewicz.

The dead are rising all over the DC Universe and the new Batman will have to confront ghosts of his own. No, not Bruce Wayne Black Lantern (because he’s not really dead), but Black Lantern Flying Graysons. Um. Spoiler alert for BATTLE FOR THE COWL, I guess. But hell, you're all reading this on the internet, so I guess you already know everything about everything. Guest-starring Deadman, this 3-part mini is a companion to the DCU event of the summer: BLACKEST NIGHT!

BLACKEST NIGHT: SUPERMAN #1 (of 3)

Written by James Robinson. Illustrated by Eddy Barrows. 1/25 variant cover by Shane Davis.

Superman Prime, now Black Lantern Superman, has dug up Pa Kent and is unleashing him on an unsuspecting Smallville. Um. Spoiler alert for INFINITE CRISIS? And for, um, whatever comic Pa Kent died in?

BLACKEST NIGHT: TITANS #1 (of 3)

Written by J.T. Krul. Illustrated by Ed Benes and Rob Hunter. 1/25 variant cover by Brian Haberlin.

Wow, this should be awesome, because Teen Titans die all the time. I think there are actually more dead Titans than live ones. They should get their own book: DEAD TITANS. Oh, and the solicitation asks the question “How can Beast Boy not lose his heart to Black Lantern Terra?” Because she's a rotting corpse, dude. Quite likely the only book all year featuring superhero necrophilia, and if that’s not a reason to pick up a book, nothing is.

GREEN LANTERN #45

The return (again!) of the “world’s strangest heroes”. Written by Giffen and illustrated by Matt Clark, and promising no previous knowledge of the complicated history of these characters, this book looks like it could be pretty good. Also, an ongoing co-feature featuring the Metal Men, and brought to us by the creative team of the JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL days: Giffen, DeMatteis, and Maguire!

JUSTICE LEAGUE: CRY FOR JUSTICE #2 (of 6)

Written by James Robinson. Illustrated by Mauro Cascioli.

Continuing the adventures of the new proactive Justice League team led by Green Lantern and Green Arrow, this issue sees the League come up against an army of super-villains.

POWER GIRL #4

Written by Jimmy Palmiotti & Justin Gray. Illustrated by Amanda Conner. Cover by Amanda Conner. 1/10 variant cover by Guillem March.

This excellent new series begins a new arc, providing you the perfect opportunity to see how much fun this book is, and that it is not simply about the title-character’s physical attributes. Power Girl versus three sexy alien invaders looking to destroy the Earth. Yup, this title is fun, and definitely worth checking out!

But deep as that mystery is, it's nothing compared to the fact that he can set himself on fire and not die. And that when he's on, um, FIRE, he looks nothing like the man he is when not, you know, ON FIRE.

THE RED CIRCLE: THE SHIELD #1

This annual follows that trend as Mon-El is given a chance to explore Daxam’s ancient history, making discoveries about its role as a Kryptonian colony, its connection to the ancient Mayans, and its bloody civil war. A must have for Vertigo fans, this book represents the first ever stand-alone prose novel set in the Fables universe and written by Fables creator Willingham. This book tells the story of Peter Piper and his brother Max, a story of sibling rivalry, music, revenge, and magic that begins all the way in the medieval ages and continues up to the present, where their story erupts in modern day Fabletown. This book also features an 8 page comic sequence that serves as a bridge to the main Fables comic series.

THE SANDMAN: THE DREAM HUNTERS HC

Written by Neil Gaiman. Adapted & illustrated by P. Craig Russell.

Here's some good news for your illiterate ass: a comics adaptation of the prose story that was previously illustrated by Yoshitaka Amano. This comic was made to “celebrate” the 20th Anniversary of THE SANDMAN, and came about because DC Comics was too cheap to pay Neil Gaiman to write a new story, so they thought, “Hey, let's reward the fans by reheating some stale leftovers. They'll buy it anyways because comic nerds don't have the ability to say No!”

WILDSTORM

EX MACHINA #44

Written by Brian K. Vaughan.  Illustrated by Tony Harris & Jim Clark. Cover by Tony Harris.

Is that a new costume for the Great Machine? Is Mayor Hundred finally back in the super-hero business?? This issue has Hundred risking it all to descend into the sewers of New York to finally learn why he was given the strange powers that helped him become the Great Machine!

RED HERRING #1 (of 6)

Written by David Tischman. Illustrated by Philip Bond & David Hahn. Cover by Philip Bond.

This new conspiracy-theory filled series looks pretty cool. Tischman has a solid record of creating some interesting and original books, and Bond’s artwork is always excellent. This definitely looks worth trying.

GEARS OF WAR BOOK ONE HC

Written by Joshua Ortega. Illustrated by Liam Sharp.

Bridging the gap between the end of the first game and the start of the second, this gorgeously illustrated series tells the continuing tale of Marcus Fenix’s Delta Squad and their fight against the Locust.

SLEEPER SEASON TWO TP

Written by Ed Brubaker. Illustrated by Sean Philips.

Brubaker & Philip’s (CRIMINAL) fantastic super hero espionage story concludes in this second volume. This book is SO fucking good! Trust us and pick this up. You won’t be disappointed.

JAMES ROBINSON'S COMPLETE WILDCATS TP

Written by James Robinson. Illustrated by Travis Charest, Jim Lee, Barry Windsor-Smith, and more.

Former STARMAN and current SUPERMAN scribe James Robinson began the first WildC.A.T.s revamp and introduced characters like Ben Santini, who went on to lead StormWatch Team Achilles. Complimented by the stunning art of Charest and Lee, this book set the stage for Alan Moore's legendary Wildcats run. This collection features issues #15 to 20, Wildstorm Rising #1, WildC.A.T.S. Annual #1, and Team One / WildC.A.T.S. #1-2.

CHEW #3

Written by John Layman. Illustrated by Rob Guillory.

The newest issue of this super-good whacked new series features the debut of the woman that Tony Chu is madly in love with - a food critic who can write about food so accurately and vividly that people get the sensation of taste when reading her reviews. Things get complicated after that, but I can hardly wait to see where this book goes next.

THE DARKNESS / PITT #1 (of 3)

Written by Paul Jenkins. Illustrated by Dale Keown.

Is it just me or is every Top Cow superhero only here to cross over with somebody else's superhero? Doesn't Top Cow have its own universe to play in anymore? Regardless, Keown’s run on THE DARKNESS was incredibly good and still stands up to modern tastes. He was also responsible for bringing us the nose-less Hulk clone “Pitt”. Well, teamed with Paul Jenkins, Keown now has a chance to bring these two icons of Image together in a three issue mini-series featuring alien viruses and the Federal Government.

G-MAN: CAPE CRISIS #1 (of 5)

Written & illustrated by Chris Giarrusso.

The MINI-MARVELS series Giarrusso has done for Marvel has been a very pleasant and enjoyable read, and you don’t have to be a kid to enjoy it. Stories like that are what comics are all about. Bringing his own creation G-Man to a 5 issue series, I expect no less than good ole fashion superhero fun.

INVINCIBLE #65

Written by Robert Kirkman. Illustrated by Ryan Ottley & FCO Plascenia.

This book consistently delivers super hero excellence, but that cover featuring a funeral doesn’t bode well for fans of a certain red-haired heroine.

KING CITY #1

Written & illustrated by Brandon Graham.

This looks like a very cool new series, mixing mystery, weirdness, and funny with indie cred.

I’m looking forward to this one a lot! Recommend for fans of SCOTT PILGRIM, CASSANOVA, or other such indie/hipster action comics. This Brandon Graham guy is for real. I’m looking forward to this one a lot!

TYRESE GIBSON'S MAYHEM #1 (of 3)

Written by Tyrese Gibson, Mike Le, and William Wilson. Illustrated by Tone Rodriguez.

I don't know about you, but I for one was waiting impatiently for the day actor Tyrese Gibson, star of 2 FAST 2 FURIOUS would come out with his own comic book series. And now that day is finally here!

WITCHBLADE #129

Written by Ron Marz. Illustrated by Stjepan Sejic. Covers by Stjepan Sejic and John Tyler Christopher.

The penultimate chapter of the epic “War of the Witchblades” saga delivers more excitement this month, as the two bearers continue their fierce battle and a victor is ready to be chosen.

INVINCIBLE PRESENTS: ATOM EVE COLLECTED EDITION

Written by Benito Cereno. Illustrated by Nate Bellegarde and Bill Crabtree.

This collected edition reprints the solo adventures and the origin story of Atom Eve and is well worth reading. And if you’ve been following recent developments in the Invincible universe, it seems like this collection will serve as a farewell tribute to our red-headed heroine.

KILLER OF DEMONS TP

Written by Christopher Yost. Illustrated by Scott Wegener.

Dave Sloan has an angel that allows him to see the demons disguised as humans (mostly they are his co-workers or others that he finds annoying). Dave is killing these demons, but questions whether he’s really saving the world or if he’s simply a murdering madman. Talk about a tough choice. Wegener’s art alone makes me want this book, and Chris Yost nails the dark humour.

THE WALKING DEAD VOLUME 10: WHAT WE BECOME TP

Written by Robert Kirkman. Illustrated by Charlie Adlard and Cliff Rathburn.

Yes, it’s time for another collected edition of the best written zombie series out there! Collecting issues #55 - #60, this book sees our merry band of survivors struggle to reach Washington DC. I wonder who will die next.

DARK AVENGERS #8

Written by Matt Fraction. Illustrated by Luke Ross. Cover by Mike Deodato. Variant cover by Simone Bianchi.

Part 5 of “Utopia” continues from UNCANNY X-MEN #514, and increases the intensity of the battle between the X-Men and Norman Osborn’s Dark teams.

DAREDEVL #500

Written by Ed Brubaker, with Anne Nocenti, and others. Illustrated by Michael Lark, with David Aja, and others. 50/50 covers by Marko Djurdjevic and Alex Ross. Variant covers by Gabriele Dell’Otto and Geoff Darrow.

Daredevil returns to the classic numbering just in time for an over-sized anniversary spectacular issue #500.  The culmination of the “Return of the King” story and everything that Brubaker has been building towards happens here. Brubaker’s landmark run on the title comes to an end, with the Kingpin’s plan revealed while Daredevil and Lady Bullseye square off. If tradition on this series is any indication, the departing writer always tends to leave Matt in a very shitty hole, so I’m freaking ecstatic to see where Brubaker leaves things for new series writer, Andy Diggle. This issue also contains some short stories by Ann Nocenti, David Aja, and others, and some additional reprinted material.

FANTASTIC FOUR #570

Written by Jonathan Hickman. Illustrated by Dale Eaglesham. Cover by Alan Davis.

A new creative team begins this issue, hopefully signalling the start of a new era and return to greatness for Marvel’s First Family. Now if I can just get past the overly muscled way that Eaglesham draw’s Mister Fantastic.

GHOST RIDERS: HEAVEN’S ON FIRE #1 (of 6)

Written by Jason Aaron. Illustrated by Roland Boschi.

Jason Aaron’s wonderfully grindhouse rendition of Ghost Rider will come to a close after more than two years with this 6 issue limited series. If the title is any indication, there’s going to be some serious shit going down, and it’s going to be a helluva ride.

IMMORTAL WEAPONS #2 (of 5)

Written by Cullen Bunn. Back-up written by Duane Swierczynski. Illustrated by Dan Brereton. Back-up illustrated by Travel Foreman. Cover by David Aja.

The terrifying Bride of Nine Spiders is in the spotlight this month, as the history of the Immortal Weapons continues.

IRON MAN & THE ARMOUR WARS #1 (of 4)

Written by Joe Caramagna. Illustrated by Craig Rousseau. Cover by Skottie Young.

Man how much would it suck if you had everything your heart desires and absolutely no time to enjoy them? Instead you’re stuck fighting your own super hero armours. Talk about a big old pile of lame!

THE MARVELS PROJECT #1 (of 8)

Written by Ed Brubaker. Illustrated by Steve Epting. Cover by Steve Epting. Variant cover by Gerald Parel.

In celebration of Marvel’s 70th anniversary, the team who revitalized Captain America reunites to bring us what promises to be a nostalgia tinged tale that tells us the origin of the current Marvel universe, beginning with the death of a mysterious old man in 1939. The secret-secret-secret origins of the earliest Marvel heroes including Human Torch (the robot one), the Sub-Mariner (the same one), and The Incredible Hulk (the burlesque dancing one)!

PUNISHER NOIR #1 (of 4)

Written by Frank Tieri. Illustrated by Paul Azaceta. Cover by Tim Bradstreet.

In the 1920’s Dutch Schultz held even the toughest of gangsters in check through fear and intimidation, but now the man who stared down Capone has caught the attention of a rather unpleasant man wearing a familiar white skull motif. Marvel continues their run of “noir” style stories as Frank Castle squares off with the mob in an old school crime yarn.

REBORN #2 (of 5)

Written by Ed Brubaker. Illustrated by Bryan Hitch. Cover by John Cassaday.

Although Marvel is still keeping tight-lipped about this project, more and more it’s looking like the hero being reborn in this series is none other than Steve Rogers Captain America. That, or the girlie Bucky created by Rob Liefeld. Exciting.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #601

Written by Mark Waid. Illustrated by Mario Alberti. Cover by J. Scott Campbell.

The moment we’ve all been waiting for has finally happened: the return of Mary-Jane begins this month! Mark Waid tackles the hefty task of reintroducing Mary Jane Watson to the life of everyone’s favourite neighbourhood hero starting this issue, and continuing in #602 & #603.

THUNDERBOLTS #135

Written by Andy Diggle. Illustrated by Miguel Sepulveda. Cover by Francesco Mattina.

Fuckin’ A. That’s what I say after I finish reading an issue of the wonderfully messed up book. Diggle has said he’s always wanted to write a Nick Fury tale and lo and behold who is appearing this month. I love it when a writer gets to play with all the pieces in the toy box and that’s what this book does. It takes things pretty far into left field and sticks you with a group of people you would feel hella uncomfortable with.

ULTIMATE COMICS AVENGERS #1

Written by Mark Millar. Illustrated by Carlos Pacheco. Cover by Carlos Pacheco. Villain variant cover by Olivier Coipel.

The Ultimate Universe re-launches this month, and hyperbole enthusiast Mark Millar returns to the creations he helped define as “The Ultimates” become “The Avengers”! Along with ever popular Carlos Pacheco, Millar’s going to kick thing off with a bang and make this book a can’t miss title!

ULTIMATE COMICS SPIDER-MAN #1

Written by Brian Michael Bendis. Illustrated by David Lafuente. Cover by David Lafuente. Villain variant cover by Marko Djurdjevic.

The Ultimate Universe re-launches this month, with an all-new Ultimate Spider-Man! Who is wearing the costume of our favourite web-slinger? And who survived the destruction of ULTIMATUM? Find out beginning in this all-new series, written by Bendis (of course) and illustrated by excellent new artist David Lafuente (HELLCAT).

WOLVERINE WEAPON X #4

Written by Jason Aaron. Illustrated by Ron Garney. 50/50 covers by Ron Garney & Adi Granov.

Jason Aaron should never leave this book. His handle of the character is awesome and he knows how to use what makes Wolverine so badass, and turn it on its side that we find ourselves compelled. Lots of stabby, lots of story. Everything a Wolverine book should be.

X-FACTOR #47

Written by Peter David. Illustrated by Valentine DeLandro.

This book has been excellent for some time now, and somehow keeps getting better and better every month. Recent issues have seen more plot twists than would be considered possible, and this issue continues the high level of excitement as things build towards a climax in the fast approaching issue #50.

UNCANNY X-MEN #514

Written by Matt Fraction. Illustrated by Terry Dodson. Cover by Terry Dodson. Variant cover by Simone Bianchi.

The big battle between the X-Men and Norman Osborne’s Dark Avengers and Dark X-Men continues in part 4 of the epic “Utopia”.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE DEATH OF CAPTAIN AMERICA OMNIBUS HC

Written by Ed Brubaker. Illustrated by Steve Epting, Mike Perkins, Luke Ross, and others.

If you’ve somehow not heard, Ed Brubaker has been creating some of the very best super hero comics you will ever read with his masterpiece run on Captain America. This collection follows the aftermath of the assassination of Steve Rogers and is worth reading by everyone who enjoys excellent story-telling.

RUNAWAYS: PRIDE & JOY TP

Written by Brian K Vaughn. Illustrated by Adrian Alphona.

For all the people who have been complaining that the only way to get this in a non digest format is the hard covers, well it seems you have been heard as Marvel is re-releasing the runaways series in a traditional trade paperback trim. If you have been holding out, or were unsure whether to check out this series, now’s a good a time as any to see why so many people fell in love with these characters.

THOR BY J. MICHAEL STRACZYNSKI VOL. 2 TP

Written by JMS. Illustrated by Oliver Coipel & Marko Djurdjevic.

What is there to say about JMS’ Thor? How about “wonderful” and “epic”. Beautiful art and writing are symbiotically linked here to create a sprawling tale, with so many layers and depth, it all comes alive. Shocks and awes abound in this book. Do yourself a favour and give it a read.

ASTONISHING X-MEN: GHOST BOXES PREMIERE HC

Written by Warren Ellis. Illustrated by Simone Bianchi, Alan Davis, Clayton Crain, Kaare Andrews, and Adi Granov.

Warren Ellis brings his sci-fi leanings and wild imagination to the new look Astonishing X-Men in this hardcover that collects issues #25-30 and Ghost boxes #1-2. The X-Men are some of the last mutants left alive in this world or any other. Or so they believe until they encounter violent mutants from a parallel dimension, with ties to one of their own.

UNCANNY X-MEN: SISTERHOOD TP

Written by Matt Fraction. Illustrated by Greg “porn-face” Land & Yanick Paquette.

Matt Fraction continues to reinvigorate the X-Men, and this collection features the team having to battle a collection of some of their deadliest female foes. Greg “porn-face” Land’s art is pretty enough, but unfortunately makes all of the female characters nearly indistinguishable from each other. But Fraction’s energy and clever twists make this worth reading.

X-MEN: MUTANT MASSACRE HC

Written by Chris Claremont and various. Illustrated by John Romita Jr. and others.

Yay! Finally I get to read this in a printing where the art doesn’t look all crappy because the colours are all off. Mutant massacre was such a huge story that tore through the Marvel Universe, it seriously changed things. It established the Marauders as great villains, and made it feel like no one was safe any more. So many great moments in these pages, especially Wolverine vs. Sabretooth. That blew my mind when I first read this, but then again I was also a kid and anything with Wolverine at the time was like I had just found gold.

Every once and a while a statue comes along that looks so good it doesn’t really matter whether or not you’re a fan of the character. This fantastic looking Goliath statue from the GARGOYLES series definitely fits that description. Isn’t it kind of ironic to make a statue of a gargoyle?

GI JOE: A REAL AMERICAN HERO SEASON 1 PART 1 DVD

PREDATOR 2: BIO HELMET 1/1-SCALE LIMITED EDITION PROP REPLICA

For the die hard Predator fan this is one of the “be all - end all“ pieces you can own. A perfect replica of the bio helmet, the only thing that would make this even more badass would be if you could put it on and see heat signatures, but maybe that’s asking for too much.

This t-shirt serves as a handy dandy guide to determining whether the Spock in front of you is good or evil via a simple graphic: Evil Spock = goatee. Good Spock = no goatee. Brilliant.
