HOT MEXICAN LOVE COMICS

BATGIRL #1

Written by Adam Beechen.  Illustrated by Jim Calafiore & Jonathan Glapion.

Okay, so this new mini-series should help appease all of the fans of the “new” (well, “new” as in not Barbara Gordon) Batgirl who were disappointed by the cancellation of her title a few years ago, then baffled by her return suddenly as a villain.  Adam Beechen should deliver a really good Cassandra Cain Batgirl story and help solidify her position in the Bat-family.

DETECTIVE COMICS #846

Written by Paul Dini.  Illustrated by Dustin Nguyen & Derek Fridolfs.

“The Return of Hush, part 1 of 5”.  The perfect issue to start on Detective.  If ANYONE can make Hush cool, it’s gotta be Dini & Nguyen.

GOTHAM CENTRAL: IN THE LINE OF FIRE HC

Written by Greg Rucka & Ed Brubaker.  Illustrated by Michael Lark.

The first trade of this fantastic series has been out of print for some time now, denying too many people the pleasure of discovering just how good this book really was.  This first of four hard covers collects the first ten issues of the series, and is the perfect introduction if you haven’t checked it out before.  Set on the mean streets of Gotham City, the book follows not Batman himself, but the police detectives of Gotham City’s Special Crimes Unit: the cops charged with dealing with the costumed crazies that haunt the darkened alleys of the city.  Learn what it’s like to be cannon fodder in Batman’s city.

ROBIN: YEAR ONE TP (NEW PRINTING)

Written by Chuck Dixon & Scott Beatty.  Illustrated by Javier Pulido & Robert Campanella.

BOOSTER GOLD #1,000,000

Written by Geoff Johns & Jeff Katz.  Illustrated by Dan Jurgens & Norm Rapmund.

This excellent series delivers yet another tie-in issue for a long ago crossover event.  This well written and illustrated title is an enjoyable and fun read month in and month out.

GREEN LANTERN CORPS #26

Written by Peter J. Tomasi. Illustrated by Patrick Gleason & Drew Geraci.

The best buddy cop film since Lethal Weapon.  Guy & Kyle or Riggs & Murtaugh?  “Trust me you ain’t too old for this shit!”  This is DC’s most underrated title after Manhunter and Blue Beetle.  Mongul is in control of the yellow power rings, and he brings the mysterious Mother Mercy to battle the Corps.

JUSTICE SOCIETY ANNUAL #1

Written by Geoff Johns.  Illustrated by Jerry Ordway.  Cover by Alex Ross.

Does Power Girl finally return home?  Does this mean the return of a hell of alot of characters whose existence had been erased by DC with the original “Crisis” series?  Read this issue to find out.

MANHUNTER #32

Written by Marc Andreyko.  Illustrated by Michael Gaydos.

The second issue of the re-relaunched title that everyone should be reading (and by everyone, we mean anyone who can appreciate a consistently well written, excellently illustrated title, that brings something fresh and unique that very few comics do).  Seriously, get us to back order #31 and order this one and you won’t be disappointed!

ABSOLUTE RONIN HC

Written & illustrated by Frank Miller.

Miller’s classic epic receives the “Absolute” treatment, providing you with the ideal way to discover (or rediscover) this masterpiece.

THE SPIRIT VOL. 2 HC

Written by Darwyn Cooke, Walter Simonson, Gail Simone and others.  Illustrated by Darwyn Cooke, J. Bone and others.

Darwyn Cooke’s run on The Spirit, the character originally created by comics legend Will Eisner, is clearly a labour of love.  It’s also an amazingly fun comic, melding the joy of golden age comics with a modern sensibility.  The first hardcover volume is an incredibly enjoyable read, and the second and last in Cooke’s work on the character promises to be just as much fun.  Picking this up is highly recommended for anyone who is a fan of comics.

ALL-STAR SUPERMAN VOL. 1 TP

Written by Grant Morrison.  Illustrated by Frank Quietly.

For those of you who didn’t pick up the hard cover, you can finally read just how good this series has been.

SUPERMAN: KRYPTONITE HC

Written by Darwyn Cooke.  Illustrated by Tim Sale.

Superman was plagued by far too many delays in most of his titles last year, and this volume collects the much anticipated, but far too long to be completed story by Cooke & Sale.  Well worth reading now that the wait is over.

VERTIGO

THE ALCOHOLIC HC

Written by Jonathan Ames.  Illustrated by Dean Haspiel.

“In the proud tradition of drunken writers everywhere!”  This original graphic novel tells the story of a boozed up fictional writer, and if what Vertigo has shown as a preview is any indication, then this should be a fun romp in alcoholic delirium.

FABLES #75

Written by Bill Willingham.  Illustrated by Mark Buckingham and Steve Leialoha.

Apparently nothing will be the same again.  Apparently someone dies.  Yeah, we’ve heard this before, but honestly, Fables is cool, and they can say whatever they want.  So pick up this double-sized Anniversary Issue!

HEAVY LIQUID HC

Written & illustrated by Paul Pope.

The creator of the insanely good “Batman Year One Hundred” also gave us this trippy sci-fi drug story which is a must read for those who have not yet experienced the madness.

SCALPED #19

Written by Jason Aaron.  Illustrated by David Furno.

Ah Scalped… you are my crack.  If you give this book the chance it deserves, you will need it.

WILDSTORM

WILDCATS: WORLD’S END #1

Written by Christos Gage.  Illustrated by Neil Googe.

Um, yeah.  So remember how Wildcats was supposed to relaunch a few years ago?  Grant Morrison kind of fucked that up.  And in the space between, the WildStorm Universe kind of exploded.  So here’s a brand new ongoing series, in a brand new post-apocalyptic world, and the editors assure us there are already many issues in the can, so that these will ship on time.  Next month sees the return of The Authority, Gen 13 and StormWatch.  For a PDF preview of the “World’s End” relaunch titles, go here: http://www.dccomics.com/sites/wildstorm_worlds_end/

AMERICAN FLAGG! VOL. 1 HC

Written by Howard Chaykin.  Illustrated by Howard Chaykin, James Sherman, Pat Broderick, and Rick Burchett.

The classic series from the 80’s finally gets the deluxe treatment with this new collection.  A must for anyone who remembers this series or enjoys the less mainstream work of Chaykin.

FRANK FRAZETTA’S CREATURES #1

Written by Rick Remender.  Illustrated by Peter Bergting.  Cover by Frank Frazetta.

The premise is simply too good to pass on.  Before he became president of the United States, Teddy Roosevelt was a paranormal investigator attempting to uncover a plot by aliens and demons to destroy our world.  I'm waiting for a guest appearance from Hellboy and Indiana Jones... how cool would that be?  They could fight a giant snake.

BROKEN TRINITY #1 (OF 3)

Written by Ron Marz.  Illustrated by Stjepan Sejic.

A new crossover mini that will forever change the Witchblade, Darkness, & Angelus forever, as well as introduce a new player in the Top Cow universe, because apparently there aren’t enough boobtacular women wearing mystical war-thongs of destiny.

COMIC BOOK TATTOO GN

Written & illustrated by various.

This massive collection of over 50 stories is inspired by the songs and recordings of Tori Amos.  And now is the part where you say, “seriously?  Tori Amos?”  I’m not a fan at all, but when you have over 80 of the top creators in comics, like David Mack and Pia Guerra, in one anthology, do we really need to say more?

LIBERTY COMICS: CBLDF BENEFIT BOOK (ONE-SHOT)

Written by Ed Brubaker, Darwyn Cooke, Garth Ennis, Mark Evanier, and Mark Millar.  Illustrated by Sergio Aragones, Darwyn Cooke, John Paul Leon, Sean Phillips, and Darick Robertson.

A new “Criminal” story by Brubaker & Phillips!  A new “The Boys” story by Ennis & Robertson!  Mark Millar!  Darwyn Cooke!  A benefit book so that helps all people involved in our industry.

PILOT SEASON: THE CORE #1

Written by Jonathan Hickman.  Illustrated by Kenneth Rocafort.

It’s that time of the year where you can vote for which new series you wish to stay.  Jonathan Hickman has proven himself a great sci-fi writer, but hasn’t really done anything longer than 6 issues, now he has a shot.  This series centers around the core of the universe where political turmoil occurs when a human is appointed to an extraterrestrial special forces unit.

PILOT SEASON: URBAN MYTHS #1

Written by Jay Faerber.  Illustrated by Jorge Molina.

Think of Bendis's "Powers", but with Greek Gods instead of Super heroes.

NOCTURNALS: CARNIVAL OF BEASTS #1 (ONE-SHOT)

Written by Dan Brereton.  Illustrated by Dan Brereton, Viktor Kalachev, and Ruben Martinez.

A new chapter in the LONG overdue story of the Nocturnals is always a good thing.  And this comics features three stories, all written by creator Dan Brereton, and including one illustrated by Brereton as well.  Fans of the dark fantastic rejoice!

PROOF #10

Written by Alex Grecian.  Illustrated by Riley Rossmo.

In case you haven’t been able to tell yet, we really like this title.  And this issue begins a brand new arc, which should give you the perfect opportunity to see just how much fun this book has been thus far.  Take our word for it and treat yourself.

CAPTAIN AMERICA WHITE #0

Written by Jeph Loeb.  Illustrated by Tim Sale.

The team of Loeb and Sale return to the Mighty Marvel and continue with their acclaimed ‘colour’ book series, this time bringing Captain America and his side-kick Bucky to the stage.   Okay, let’s be honest.  I used to love the Loeb/Sale collaborations, but ever since Loeb started working for Marvel again, his work has been TERRIBLE.  Hello, “Hulk”.  Hello “Ultimates 3”.  So!  Here’s hoping this is a return to form, and not the latest in “OH THE HUMANITY” school of writing.

CRIMINAL VOL. 3 TP: THE DEAD AND THE DYING

Written by Ed Brubaker.  Illustrated by Sean Phillips.

For all of you who are trade waiting, you finally get to read the first arc of the new series!  For everyone who has heard such good things about this book, hurry the hell up and buy the damn thing already!  You don’t need to know what has come before, just jump on into the deep end with the rest of us.

FANTASTIC FOUR: TRUE STORY #1 (OF 4)

Written by Paul Cornell.  Illustrated by Horacio Dominguez.

The Fantastic Four visit the one place they’ve never explored before: fiction!  I’m not sure anyone actually demanded this series, but the preview art looks great and it sounds like a really fun mini-series worth checking out.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #3

Written by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning.  Illustrated by Paul Pelletier

It’s not too late to pick up this on-going series by the creators who brought you “Annihilation: Conquest”.  In this issue Starhawk returns!  Confused?  Of course, he was an original Guardian, from another reality in the 31st century of Marvel.  Why is he here?  Find out!

IMMORTAL IRON-FIST #17

Written by Duane Swierczynski.  Illustrated by Travel Forman.

Okay, it might be an understatement to say we were all a little bit upset when we heard of the departure of Ed Brubaker & Matt Fraction from the title they resurrected.  But they did such a good redeeming the character, that his books deserves a chance even though they’ve left it.  So if you’ve been reading Iron Fist, keep on it.  And if you spurned all of our advice about this book over the last year and a half, well, perhaps this is your chance to make amends (you bastard).

PATSY WALKER: HELLCAT, AGENT OF THE INITIATIVE #1 (OF 5)

Written by Kathryn Immonen.  Illustrated by David Lafuente.  Cover by Stuart Immonen.

We enjoy Kathryn’s writing, and the covers by her husband Stuart will be his usual fantastic work, but a five issue series for Hellcat?  Really?

SECRET INVASION #4

Written by Brian Michael Bendis.  Illustrated by Leinil Francis Yu.

Brian Bendis is proving he’s at the top of his game here, and so far this is a must-read event for any Marvel fan.  Even if you barely know that {spoiler alert} Peter Parker is Spider-Man, this is well worth checking out.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY EXTRA! (ONE-SHOT)

Written by Joe Kelly, Marc Guggenheim, Zeb Wells.  Illustrated by Chris Bachalo & various.

Because three times a month simply isn’t enough Spider-Man. Maybe it will contain an apology by Quesada.  Or an explanation that the Mary Jane that made a deal with the devil was nothing more than a skrull.  Or maybe this will be first time Marvel milks the Spiderman fans out of more money.  Yeah... were guessing that's a no.

ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #124

Written by Brian Michael Bendis.  Illustrated by Stuart Immonen.

‘War of the Symbiotes’ continues as readers get introduced to a classic Spidey character: Ultimate Beetle.  Okay, okay, he wasn’t that cool, but when you stick ‘Ultimate’ in front of his name, doesn’t that make him cool?  Doesn’t it?

WOLVERINE: FIRST CLASS #5

Written by Fred Van Lente.  Illustrated by Clayton Henry.

Wolverine goes to Canada and he takes Kitty Pryde with him, where – of course – they happen to meet Canada’s premiere super-hero team.  This is as close as we’re getting to Alpha Flight anytime soon, so make sure you enjoy this one.

UNCANNY X-MEN #500

Written by Ed Brubaker & Matt Fraction.  Illustrated by Greg Land & Terry Dodson.

Uncanny reaches its 500th issue!!!  Now, I’m so thrilled about the writers.  “Iron Fist” and “Casanova”?  Amazing.  “Daredevil” and “Captain America”?  Really good!  But Greg “pornface” Land?  Greg “I trace porn pictures and MY OWN EARLIER DRAWINGS” Land?  Seriously?  How does he get such a landmark job as this milestone issue of X-Men?  Boggles the fanboy mind.  But focus on the writers, and join us as they bring the X-Men away from the east coast and to their new base of operations in San Francisco. It’s double-sized, jam-packed, and as an added bonus a 50/50 wraparound cover by Alex Ross!!

ASTONISHING X-MEN #25

Written by Warren Ellis.  Illustrated by Simone Bianchi.

The Astonishing team is back!  This time with a roster, a new base of operations, a new look, and a new creative team.  Are the X-Men back in business for good?  Will they be able to solve the mystery that plagues them?  Will the title be able to come out monthly?  For anyone who loved the Whedon/Cassaday run, you must be pleased that Marvel has chosen a creative team that’s guaranteed to give us Astonishing X-Men’s proud tradition of being late.  Really late.

X-MEN: FIRST CLASS #14

Written by Jeff Parker.  Illustrated by Roger Cruz.

This books deserves some attention because despite how Marvel markets the book, it is one of the most consistently excellent X-Men books out there.  Lacking some of the dark and gritty edges of modern X-Tales, this is a really nice throwback to the silver age of comics.  Humour mixes with action, and one of the best eras of the X-Men – that of the Xavier’s original students – is explored in far more depth than it got back in the day.

X-MEN: LONGSHOT HC

Written by Ann Nocenti.  Illustrated by Art Adams.

Read the original appearance of everyone’s favourite non-mutant X-Man, Longshot!  Just in time for this rarely seen character joining Peter David’s excellent “X-Factor” book.  Plus, it’s got some fantastic early Art Adams artwork.

DAY OF THE DEAD: BUB DELUXE ACTION FIGURE

The coolest Zombie ever gets the deluxe treatment to coincide with the “Night of the Living Dead” anniversary.  If you like zombies, then this is a no brainer.  (Get it?  That was funny).

FINAL FANTASY VII SCULPTURE ART: AERITH GAINSBOROUGH

This is a good month for Kotobukiya. This Final Fantasy VII based statue captures the magic of the character and even more simply a moment.  Beautiful.

HELLBOY T-SHIRTS

Just in time for the movie (which is going to be amazing), Dark horse has issued four great T-shirts if you want to flaunt your love for the character.  I don’t know about you but I got my eye on the Lobster’s Claw.

IRON MAN KOTOBUKIYA STATUE

Kotobukiya takes their Marvel license and kicks our asses with it. This Iron Man statue is gorgeous and even lights up.  I can’t wait to see what else they come out with.  If you’re an Iron man enthusiast then this is essential.

IRON MAN: “STARKER HEAD - M” T-SHIRT

One of the great things about having a favorite comic character hit the silver screen is that some

really great merchandise comes out for them.  Take this t-shirt with a cool, yet not overly done, image of Iron Man’s helmet smack dab in the centre.  I’d certainly wear that around town, to all the many parties I go to while I hang out with all my celebrity friends.  You know, like my friend whose got his own blog.  He gets tons of hits, but not as many as I’ll get wearing an awesome Iron Man shirt.  Have I slipped off into sarcasm yet?  Heck no, it’s a dang cool shirt.

LOST KUBRICKS

Possibly the coolest Kubricks yet.

MARVEL SELECT CAPTAIN AMERICA #34 ACTION FIGURE

How awesome has Ed Brubaker’s Captain America comic been?  If you don’t know the answer then I’ll direct you to the trade paperbacks and Omnibus Volume so you can revel in its majesty.  For those that do know just how great the title has been, you might want to buy yourself a little something more than the books.  The Marvel Select figure of the new Captain America is out, and these are articulate statue-like figures perfect for display or play.

MINI MAG ACTION FIGURE DISPLAYS

For anyone having trouble displaying their many figures, a solution has arrived in these neat Action figure displays.  Pretty nifty.

SPIDER-MAN ANIMATED WALL CLOCK

Spider-man holding a clock from his webs.  ‘NUFF SAID.

WOMEN OF THE DC UNIVERSE: SERIES 2 – JADE BUST

The latest installment in the popular, ‘Women of the DC Universe’ line is Alan Scott’s (the original Green Lantern) daughter Jade.
