ASHLEY WOOD’S D’AIRAIN AVENTURE #1 Written and illustrated by Ashley Wood.  Isn’t Ashley SO artistic?  Look how he left the “D” out of “adventure” so that it sounds, like, FRENCH OR SOMETHING.  OMD! (Oh, mon dieu!)

TRANSFORMERS SPOTLIGHT: ULTRA MAGNUSWritten by Simon Furman.  Illustrated by Robby Musso.  When I was a kid, I had an Ultra Magnus toy, but I always really wanted Optimus Prime.  My parents said that made me ungrateful, but let’s face it, Ultra Magnus will never be cool.  He’ll always be second best.  And that’s like being the King Loser.

DARK HORSE GRAPHIC NOVELS

FAFHRD AND THE GRAY MOUSER TP Written by Howard Chaykin.  Illustrated by Mike Mignola.  A big honkin’ fantasy book drawn by Hellboy creator Mike Mignola! Yes, I said Mignola. I know it has been awhile but we like him. Keep it coming Mike. Keep it coming.

THE COURAGEOUS PRINCESS Written and illustrated by Rod Espinosa.  This is a really wonderful book, perfect for anyone looking to brainwash their children into loving comics. Great art and a good story make this a sure hit with children and adults.

EMILY THE STRANGE VOL 1 TP Written and illustrated by Cosmic Debris.  “Cosmic Debris” is such a strange name.  What kind of parents would do that to a child, I wonder. Strange.

HEART OF EMPIRE: THE LEGACY OF LUTHER ARKWRIGHT 2nd EDITION TP Written and illustrated by Bryan Talbot.  The Luther Arkwright books are amazing: parallel dimensions, psychic messiahs, sexy times, gunplay, British people! Truly, something for everybody.

STAR WARS 30th ANNIVERSARY COLLECTION VOL 1: THE FREEDON NADD UPRISING HC.  Written by Tom Veitch.  Illustrated by Tony Atkins.  Cover by Dave Dorman.  “Freedon Nadd” is such a stupid name.  It’s something you’d name your second child, if “Cosmic Debris” was already used.

STAR WARS: BOBA FETT – MAN WITH A MISSION TP Written by Thomas Andrews, Ron Marz, John Ostrander, and John Wagner.  Illustrated by Cam Kennedy, Adriana Melo, Francisco Ruiz Velasco, and Tsuneo Sanda.  I feel like picking a nerd fight: you know who could kick Boba Fett’s ass?  Nurse Chapel.  Eat it, padawans!

PREDATOR: FLESH AND BLOOD Written by Michael Jan Friedman.  Illustrated by Robert Greenberger.  I feel like picking another nerd fight:  You know who could kick Predator’s ass?  Kyle Rayner, because he’s the best Green Lantern there ever was.  Too bad Kyle’s not in this book.

AKIRA CLUB HC Written and illustrated by Katsuhiro Otomo.  A companion piece to one of manga’s most epic creations.

ORION 2nd EDITION.  Written and illustrated by Shirow Masamune.  A new release for a classic Shirow tale.

DC COMICS HIGHLIGHTS

BATMAN: LEGENDS OF THE DARK KNIGHT #214.  Written by Christos N. Gage.  Illustrated by Phil Winslade.  FINAL ISSUE!  May we suggest subscribing to BATMAN CONFIDENTIAL?  It’s the exact same thing, rotating stories and creators, dealing with Batman’s past, but they just wanted a sales boost with a new #1 and you know what? It worked. We now have six times the amount of people subscribing to BATMAN CONFIDENTIAL as to BATMAN LEGENDS OF THE DARK KNIGHT. New book. same premise. DC makes the sound "Cha-Ching!"

ACTION COMICS ANNUAL #10 Written by Geoff Johns & Richard Donner.  Illustrated by Art Adams, Joe Kubert, Pete Woods, Rags Morales, Kevin Maguire, Eric Wight, and Tony Daniel.

SPECIAL ATTENTION: Annuals are not included in your Action Comics subscription.  If you want it, let us know.

ROBIN #158.  Written by Beechen and Irving.  Robin and his good buddy Klarion the Witch Boy try to save a cat. (the fire department was busy shooting the annual calendar)

SUPERMAN & BATMAN VS. ALIENS & PREDATORS #1 of 2.  Written by Mark Schultz.  Illustrated by Ariel Olivetti.  While I question the possibility of this having a quality plot, I have no doubt that this book will be ridiculously cool. I have 4 reasons to support my theory. 1 – Superman. 2 – Batman. 3 Aliens. And 4 – Predators. Did I mention they’ll be fighting?

I feel like picking a nerd fight: Superman Blue was better than Superman Red; Azrael was a better Batman than Bruce Wayne could ever be; Kyle Rayner could still kick everybody’s ass, but the Aliens have always been, and always shall be, very cool.

THE HELMET OF FATE: IBIS THE INVINCIBLE #1 Written by Tad Williams.  Illustrated by Phil Winslade.  One of the many prequels to the upcoming Dr. Fate #1. In this particular book the Golden Age Icon, Ibis must find a worthy successor for his magic staff. The Helmut shows up and  voila, instant crossover.

This is a comic book about A HELMET.  Clearly, DC Comics thinks so little of you, that they’ll try to sell you any old piece of crap, and expect you to buy it like some kind of mindless fanboy amoeba.  I don’t think DC Comics could insult you more, if they tried.

THE HELMET OF FATE: DETECTIVE CHIMP #1.  Written by Bill Willingham.  Illustrated by Shawn McManus.  Aaaaaaaaaaaaand I stand corrected.

Everyone’s favourite talking monkey tries to solve the murder of numerous wannabe heroes while lugging around the gaudy HELMUT OF FATE.  Yet another exciting prequel to the impending Dr. Fate series.

DC COMICS GRAPHIC NOVELS

CHECKMATE VOL 1: A KING’S GAME TP.  Written by Greg Rucka.  Illustrated by Jesus Saiz.  See, politics, it’s like chess!  You’ve got to plan your strategy, think three moves ahead of all your opponents, and most of all, DON’T GET CAUGHT SENDING PERVERTED EMAILS TO UNDERAGE PAGES.

FIRESTORM: THE NUCLEAR MAN - REBORN TP.  I have long waited for DC to collect the Firestorm Series, and now, excitingly they have, just grossly out of order, as they are starting with issues 23 – 27. ????? ??

SEVEN SOLDIERS OF VICTORY VOL 4 TP.  Written Grant Morrison.  Illustrated by Doug Mahnke, Freddie Williams II, Yanick Paquette, & J.H. Williams III.  It’s a little late, but here’s the last collection of Grant’s trippy Seven Soldiers book.

SHOWCASE PRESENTS: AQUAMAN VOL 1 TP Written by Robert Bernstein and Jack Miller.  Illustrated by Ramona Fradon, Kurt Schaffenberger, Nick Cardy and others.  Hearken back to a time where Aquaman ruled the Oceans, and the Oceans were, you know, clean.  In 50 years, there will be no more fish.

James’ WILDSTORM UNIVERSE corner

DEATHBLOW #3 Written by Brian Azzarello.  Illustrated by Carlos D’Anda.  Variant Cover by Brian Stelfreeze.  US Assassin codename: Deathblow was presumed dead for five years, and spent that time being tortured in the middle east.  Then he was rescued by the United States, and they “debriefed” him by torturing him some more.  Then they just let him loose in the streets of New York City.  What could go wrong?

GEN 13 #4.  Written by Gail Simone.  Illustrated by Sunny Lee.  Cover by Talent Caldwell.  Variant Cover by Neil Googe.  Kids with superpowers fighting the government.  No creepy senators would sexually molest the Gen 13.

MIDNIGHTER #3 Written by Garth Ennis.  Illustrated by Chris Sprouse.  Variant Cover by Jason Pearson. As Midnighter will find out, you can’t just travel through time and kill Hitler.    Oopsie-poo-poo!

STORMWATCH: POST HUMAN DIVISION #3 Written by Christos N. Gage.  Illustrated by Doug Mahnke.  Variant Cover by Glenn Fabry.  The StormWatch team goes to Las Vegas to train and “get to know each other better”, if you know what I mean, (I mean sex, fanboy).  Vegas, baby. VEGAS!

WETWORKS #5 Written by Mike Carey.  Illustrated by Whilce Portacio.  Military telepath Jackson Dane, cyborg assassin Mother One, and werewolf detective Sebastian Ashe continue to hunt Vascar, a rogue vampire from another dimension as he tears through the Western United States.

TRANQUILITY #2.  Written by Gail Simone.  Illustrated by Neil Googe.  Variant Cover by Karl Kerschl.  A funeral for a murdered hero rocks the retired superhero community, and everyone becomes a suspect.  From the doddering, former super-villains, to the geriatric former superheroes, no one is safe from suspicion!

DANGER GIRL: BACK IN BLACK TP Written by Andy Hartnell.  Illustrated by Nick Bradshaw.  Cover by J. Scott Campbell.  Let’s pretend that J. Scott Campbell actually makes comics.  How’s it going, Wildsiderz fans?

VERTIGO

SCALPED #1 Written by Jason Aaron.  Illustrated by R.M. Guera.  Cover by Jock.  Fifteen years ago, Dashiell Bad Horse ran away from the poverty and hopelessness of the Prairie Rose Indian Reserve.  Now he’s come back to find that nothing is changed, except for a brand new casino.  Is he here to help his once-proud people escape the clutches of despair and organized crime?  Or is he here to get his own piece of the action?

DMZ VOL 2: BODY OF A JOURNALIST TP.  Written Brian Wood.  Illustrated by Riccardo Burchielli, Kristian Donaldson, & Brian Wood.  Abandoned journalist Roth gets the scoop of a lifetime, an interview with the leaders of the infamous Free Armies.

JACK OF FABLES VOL 1: THE (NEARLY) GREAT ESCAPE TP Written by Bill Willingham & Matthew Sturges.  Illustrated by Tony Akins. A wayward Fable in the heartland of America.  I assume if you like Fables, you’d enjoy this.

NEIL GAIMAN & CHARLES VESS’S STARDUST TP Written by Neil Gaiman.  Illustrated by Charles Vess.  They solicited a hardcover of this recently, and now a new softcover?  Does it have anything to do with the movie coming out?  Probably.

    IMAGE COMICS HIGHLIGHTS

THE ADVENTURES OF SPAWN #1: DIRECTOR’S CUTWritten by Jonathan David Goff.  Illustrated by Khary Randolph.  This comic is about a cartoon Spawn.  Just not the one from the Spawn cartoon.  This one is about the cartoon that connects to the toys.  Because all comics are good for nowadays is selling toys. This is the mind of the Todd.

’68 (ONE SHOT) Written by Mark Kidwell. Illustrated by Nat Jones.  A story set in 1968.  I bet if they had called this ’69, they would have sold a lot more copies, but disappointed a lot more people.

PIECES FOR MOM: A TALE OF THE UNDEAD (ONE SHOT) Written by Steve Niles.  Illlustrated by Andrew Ritchie.  If your mom is a zombie, don’t get her chocolates for mother’s day.  Instead, give her your little sister’s brains.

HIP FLASK: CONCRETE JUNGLE HC.  Written by Richard Starkings & Joe Casey.  Illustrated by Ladronn.  It’s a shame that a great artist like Ladronn will only draw comics about a Hippo Detective.  But it’s also at the same time kind of awesome.

    MARVEL COMICS HIGHLIGHTS

ULTIMATE POWER #1 DIRECTOR’S CUT Written by Brian Michael Bendis.  Illustrated by Greg Land.  Reprints #1 as well as behind-the-scenes goodies, like what Maxim Magazines Greg Land traced pictures out of.

Marvel continues to give you (almost) what you want. This time filling in for the long anticipated (and long overdue) Ultimates 2 #13 you can buy the exciting unaltered story of the Ultimates taking on the Squadron Supreme in stunning Black and White!

GHOST RIDER FINALE.  Written by Ivan Velez.  Illustrated by Javier Saltares & Mark Texeira.  Once again Marvel brings you books at lightning speed. Only 8 years late, and as always, with out of sequence numbering,  you can now get Ghost Rider #94. Just remember you don’t know what you don’t know until you drop $4.50 on it.

Way back when, Ghost Rider’s last series got cancelled and sales were so low, that they didn’t even produce the final issue.  Now, ten years later or whatever, here’s the final issue for, like, the SEVEN PEOPLE WHO STILL CAN’T GO ON WITHOUT KNOWING WHAT HAPPENED TO GHOST RIDER IN CONTINUITY THAT HAS PROBABLY BEEN RETCONNED AWAY.  The Blatant Cash-Grab Thanks to the Ghost Rider Movie That Looks Awful.

IRON MAN: HYPERVELOCITY #1 of 6.  Written by Adam Warren.  Illustrated by Brian Denham.  I like Adam Warren’s writing.  His GEN 13 was awesome and his LIVEWIRES book for Marvel was also a lot of fun.  Now he’s taking part in the Great Iron Man Flood of Products to Hype a Movie That Might Suck.

Read about the adventure of everyone’s favourite drunk in this exciting story that features more made up techno babble then a bad episode of Enterprise. But can you really pass on Cyberdrug-addled Roboravers? Can you?

MARVEL SPOTLIGHT: THE DARK TOWER. Written by John Rhett Thomas.  One day marvel will actually release the 1st issue, until then please enjoy these scraps from mashed together with epoxy and chewing gum. Still, it’s more exciting then when Thunderstrike fought Whiteout. Oh you don’t remember that?

MYTHOS: GHOST RIDER.  Written by Paul Jenkins.  Illustrated by Paolo Rivera.  Ghost Rider is such a legendary and important character, that we need to go back for a Year One style story.  All thanks to The Blatant Cash-Grab Thanks to the Ghost Rider Movie That Looks Awful.

MS. MARVEL SPECIAL.  Written by Brian Reed.  Illustrated by Giuseppe Camuncoli.  I don’t care about Ms. Marvel at all, but I think Giuseppe Camuncoli is going to be a superstar artist one of these days.  His style is totally awesome.

SILENT WAR #1 of 6.  Written by David Hine.  Illustrated by Roy Allan Martinez.  Cover by John Watson.  First Quicksilver decided to f#*k with the Avengers and the X-men. Then still hasted by the meddling concern of friends he pissed off the inhumans by stealing the Teriggen Mists; causing Black Bolt to declare war on Humanity. So far Quicksilver has started the Civil war and the Human vs. Inhuman war, meaning he’s started one more war then George W. Bush, and pissed off about half as many people as James.

The Inhumans try to remind other people that they’re important and cool, but won’t be able to compete with megastars like Ghost Rider or Iron Man until the Inhumans get a movie.  And even if they get a movie, it’ll be cast with actors from American Pie or something.  Chris Klein is BLACK BOLT!  Tara Reid is Lockjaw!

SQUADRON SUPREME: HYPERION VS NIGHTHAWK #1 of 5.  Written by Marc Guggenheim.  Illustrated by Paul Gulacy.  To fill in a scheduling gap, here is a cheap knockoff naïve Superman fighting a cheap knockoff angry Batman.

THUNDERBOLTS #110  Written by Warren Ellis.  Illustrated by Mike Deodato.  Cover by Marko Djurdjevic.  Variant Cover by Leinil Yu.  New creative team!  New roster: Venom, Moonstone, Bullseye, Sonbird, Radioactive Man, Swordsman, Penance, and Norman Osborn!  This book is now like an Evil New Avengers.  There’s a scene where Norman Osborn tastes Bullseye’s tears.  HE TASTES BULLSEYE’S TEARS!  That’s evil.

WOLVERINE #50.  Written by Jeph Loeb.  Illlustrated by Simone Bianchi & Ed McGuinness.  Wolverine fights Sabretooth.  Again.  But this time they’ve got superstar creators on their side.  Also available in a black & white version to better show off Bianchi’s amazing art.

WOLVERINE VS. SABERTOOTH!!!!!!!!!! Don’t wet yourself.

X-MEN ANNUAL #1 Written by Mike Carey.  Illustrated by Mark Brooks.  Rogue and the x-men make a desperate attempt to restore the minds of Aurora and Northstar while defending the SHIELD helicarier from an old enemy. More importantly Marvel is resetting the numbering on this wonderful book. Yet creating another organizational nightmare for those who try to put their books in order. Don’t we all love #1's?

SPECIAL ATTENTION: Annuals are not included in your regular subscriptions, if you want this annual please let us know IN ADVANCE.

CIVIL WAR

CIVIL WAR: THE RETURN.  Written by Paul Jenkins.  Illustrated by Tom Raney.  I’m pretty sure this is important, and not a comic about Civil War being delayed…BEFORE IT RETURNED!!!  One of Marvel’s greatest heroes is going to re-emerge in this apparently unpredictable issue. Now I’m no Batman, but I’ve got a solid hunch that one hammer wielding, thunder bearer cometh. And no, I don’t mean THUNDERSTRIKE, sorry to disappoint.

ULTIMATE CIVIL WAR SPIDER-HAM CRISIS (FEATURING WOLVER-HAM) #1  Written by J. Michael Strazcynski.  Illustrated by Mike Wieringo, Mike Allred, John Severin, Nick Dragotta, Ariel Olivetti, and Jim Mahfood.  No funny issue is complete without having Jim Mahfood on board.  He’s like your go-to guy for The Funny.

BLACK PANTHER #24 Written by Reginald Hudlin.  Illustrated by Koi Turnbull.  Cover by Michael Turner.  I bet Black Panther fights somebody.  Because that’s what Civil War is about!

Forget deep characterization!  Kick!  ‘Splode! THIS IS WHAT MARVEL FANS WANT!

BLADE #5 Written by Marc Guggenheim.  Illustrated by Howard Chaykin.  Cover by Marko Djurdjevic.  Blade vs. Wolverine!  My money’s on Wolverine.

MOON KNIGHT #9.  Written by Charlie Huston.  Illustrated by David Finch.  Moon Knight vs. Punisher!  My money’s on Punisher.

PUNISHER WAR JOURNAL #3.  Written by Matt Fraction.  Illustrated by Ariel Olivetti.  Punisher vs. Captain America!  My money’s on Cap.

DABEL BROS

XIII TP Written by William Vance.  Adapted by Ben Avery.  Illustrated by Jean Van Hamme.  Not an X-Men crossover.  Inspired a videogame starring David Duchovny!

MARVEL TRADE PAPERBACKS

WOLVERINE & BLACK CAT: CLAWS HC Written by Justin Gray & Jimmy Palmiotti.  Illustrated by Joseph Michael Linsner.  Not even Linsner’s art can make Wolverine pretty.

ASTONISHING X-MEN VOL 3: TORN TP Written by Joss Whedon.  Illustrated by John Cassaday.  Congratulations, Joss Whedon, for working on something that wasn’t cancelled out from underneath you.

GHOST RIDER: ROAD TO DAMNATION TP.  Written by Garth Ennis.  Illustrated by Clayton Crain. The new origin and new return of the old Ghost Rider!  Thank you, Blatant Cash-Grab Thanks to the Ghost Rider Movie That Looks Awful!

GHOST RIDER VOL 1: VICIOUS CYCLE TP.  Written by Daniel Way.  Illustrated by Javier Saltares & Mark Texeira The Blatant Cash-Grab Thanks to the Ghost Rider Movie That Looks Awful continues!  Here’s a new trade paperback.

IRON MAN: ARMOR WARS TP.  Written by David Michelinie & Bob Layton.  Illustrated by Mark Bright & Barry Windsor-Smith. Great Iron Man Flood of Products to Hype a Movie That Might Suck.  Iron Man fights Iron Bad Guys!

IRON MAN: EXTREMIS TP Written by Warren Ellis.  Illustrated by Adi Granov. Great Iron Man Flood of Products to Hype a Movie That Might Suck rolls on, so if you’re worried the movie might suck, rest easy:  this book is actually very good.  They should totally make a movie from this book.

X-FACTOR: LIFE AND DEATH MATTER PREMIER HC. This book is surprisingly good. Many of your favourite obscure mutants pop up in this sharp, gritty book. With stunning art by Ryan Sook and others this is easily Peter David’s best work in years. And the best part? Vol. 1 is still available.

 TOYS & MISC. HIGHLIGHTS

REACTIVATED! KINGDOM COME SERIES 2: ACTION FIGURES

Continuing  in the series of re-release of some of the most popular DC DIRECT toy lines comes a re release of some of the very best Kingdom Come figures. The DC reactivated series of toys are for those of you who have been kicking yourself for not picking them up when they first came out.

Series 2 of the Kingdom Come figures features Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern in their more mature forms.

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER/ ANGEL: FERIGENBAUM BUNNY PLUSH

Who knew that after the series wrapped up that the one thing fans would want most was a series of angel stuffed animals? To join spike and angel in helping lull you to sleep comes Feigenbaum the bunny. 18” tall and totally cuddly looking it is decidedly less bitey than the other plush stuff to come from the show.

DICK TRACEY STATUE

I normally shy away from statues, I mention this one because it is awesome and easy to miss. The fifth in Electric Tiki’s series of classic heroes. The Dick Tracy is the perfect statue for any collection of comic memorabilia. Hand crafted, hand painted and ready for a shelf so start clearing off some space for it now.

TITANIUM TRANSFORMERS: DELUXE METAL ACTION FIGURES

If you keep missing out on these, this is chance number three. Trust me if you are a fan of the transformers these are the toys you have been waiting for, I can not stress this enough. The second series features the addition of Scourge and Optimal Optimus. Also keep your eye out for the other four in the series War within Optimus Prime, Jetfire & Thunder cracker as well as Transformers G.I Joe Megatron.

TALES OF PHANTASIA PVC STATUE

Possibly one of the most underrated series out there, the Tales series is on of those gems that you should try to get your hands on. From its flag ship title Tales of Phantasia comes Arche & Mint, your big magic user and your innocent healer respectively . Also if you are looking for more of a tales experience you can also find Tales of Phantasia the anime out late December.

And now for my usual Square Enix love fest.

FINAL FANTASY: MECHANICAL ARTS

I really cant help myself. These things are really awesome. You probably have already seen the action figures, now comes the vehicle line. If you saw the cloud with his motorcycle toy out a while ago you know how well sculpted these are. If you missed them just take my word for it they are really good. The Continental Cruiser  from FFX starts things off nicely . From Advent Children come the Motorcycles of Cloud & Kadaj.  and form FFVII the Sister Ray is presented in its weapon smashing glory and everyone’s favourite airship the High wind.

VALKYRIE PROFILE LENNETH: TRADING ARTS MINI FIGURES

And just because Square Enix really needs more of my money in the same month they are releasing a series of Valkyrie Profile toys as well. Loosely Based on Norse mythology this unorthodox game from Square Enix has been long sought after by fans (the game goes for 75$ on eBay). The toy line feature four of the best characters from that game. lenneth Valkyrie the soul collecting hero of the game, Frey Norse queen of the gods and kick ass ether user. Lucio lenneth's hard luck boy friend
