FAQ: Free Comic Book Day on Halloween is only at Elfsar Comics & Toys

What is a "Free Comic Book Day?"

As the name implies, Free Comic Book Day is a single day when Elfsar Comics & toys is giving away comic books absolutely free to anyone who comes into the store.

When is Free Comic Book Day?

This special Free Comic Book Day will take place on October, 31st 2009.  Doors open at 11am and close at 6pm.

Are they really free?

Yes! No purchase necessary.

How many comics do I get?

Everyone who visits Elfsar in costume will get free comics from our selected titles.  Anyone who donates to the Food bank will get  additional comics for Free.

Which comics are available?

There are over 100 selected different titles being offered by Elfsar for the second time this year, from major publishers like DC & Marvel Comics to an array of independent studios from across North America.

Can I grab any comic I want?

Only the designated Free Comic Book Day comics are free and Elfsar will be giving away even more titles to those participating in the food drive, as a bonus Elfsar will also have a storewide-sale on its non-free merchandise.

What kind of charity donation are you looking for?

What do you think would make a difference in someone's life who needs to eat?  No one should ever go hungry.  We are looking for a minimum donation of 2 to 5 dollars worth of non-perishables or a 2 to 5 dollar donation to be able to purchase perishables. Of course the more you give, the more we give.  We have special prizes reserved for those who make a larger impact.  Trust me, you will want to donate more.

Is this the first Free Comic Book Day?

No. This is actually the eighth year that Free Comic Book Days have occurred and each year it gets bigger and bigger. This event is however, only local to Elfsar Comics & toys in Vancouver. In the past, thousands of stores around the world have given away millions of free comic books to interested readers.  Check out previous FCBDs at Elfsar here: http://elfsar.com/FCBD/FCBD_2009.htm

Who's involved?

Overall participation from just about every major comic book publisher has been amazing, from the biggest publishers to independent publishers, fansites, news magazines, and more.  At the Elfsar level, we are hosting a mini-convention style celebration of comics with a food drive for the Vancouver Food Bank. And costumes! Let's not forget about costumes! Show your Halloween spirit and come dressed up!

What's the big deal about comic books anyway?

Comic books are an original North American art form, created in the early days of the twentieth century. They are fun to read, featuring a wide range of diverse storylines that capture the imagination of the readers, and have survived: the dominance of radio, the ubiquity of television, the spread of color and sound motion pictures, the rise of videogames, and the Internet. That's worth celebrating in our book!

SPECIAL GUESTS:

More information on Abby, and on Dolltopia itself, can be found on her
website: http://abbycomix.com
or:  http://www.greencandypress.com

If you bring a punked up doll you may be able to get a free signed copy!

Abby Denson will be conducting a reading from her new book Dolltopia at Elfsar Comics & Toys

From Green Candy Press, Lulu Award-winning cartoonist Abby Denson is a regular script-writer for both Marvel and DC Comics, and the creator of the queer comic Tough Love:  High School Confidential will be joining us on Halloween for a comic book signing of her new book Dolltopia.   Abby is touring across Canada and she will be bringing, the punked-up Barbies and stripped-down Kens from her new book Dolltopia to join us on Halloween. This is a special stop on her  tour to celebrate it's release.

Dolltopia is the story of Kitty, a ballerina doll forced into a not-so-happily-ever-after living arrangement with a male jock toy. Filled with discontent, Kitty takes it upon herself to escape her human-imposed domesticity and create a new life and a new image for herself away from the persecution of the human world. On this mission, she finds not only a host of like-minded individuals, but a veritable heaven for the alternative doll: Dolltopia.

Abby's book, published in a deluxe edition by Green Candy Press, features French flaps where paper dolls of the two main characters, Kitty Ballerina and Army Jim, can be cut out. There are also outfits inspired by pop culture icons for each character in the book so you can plan your own escape to Dolltopia.

Meet local writer Ryan Morris and get a signed copy of his new book called "Molt".

Isabelle Donhelle is a professor of ornithology at the prestigious Hawthorne University in Boston. It's Isabelle's twenty-ninth birthday, and after escaping from a party she never wanted to be a part of, she has come to the conclusion that her life so far has lacked any significant, meaningful change. But following a chance encounter, Isabelle falls for a struggling student of hers, and quickly finds herself tangled within his uncontrollable reality. Things are not always what they seem though, and this newfound relationship is much more than Isabelle wanted to believe it was. Now she must realize that change, whether desired or not, is always more complicated after the fact.

Meet children's novelist Larry Krause. Larry has been interested in the fantasy and horror genres for years, in particular the Lord of the Rings trilogy and the horror classic Halloween. In this novel, Krause has accomplished a fusion of both fantasy and horror genres.

This is the first novel in a series of adventures involving Billy Lucas, his mysterious past and future, and a supernatural witch named Jacqueline Goble, who proves to be a powerful nemesis.  But Billy also has a few supernatural powers up his sleeve.
